Dr. Michael P Alexander, MD

i worked for dr alexander at a rehab hospital for 5 years...to be fair, he is a brilliant researcher and teaching physician....his hands-on patient care and bedside manner less so. research and teaching are really his interest...oh and publishing...patients are simply fodder for his true specialties...at the time he was in demand for expert opinion in legal situations and puzzling diagnostic cases and rightly so...he and his ilk, meaning other researchers and colleagues, make snap diagnoses about everyone they meet...from grocery clerks, newspaper delivery people, drycleaning clerks etc....they just can't help themselves...they over-analyze every little behavioral nuance into a DSM code...

If you seek condescending and perhaps inaccurate treatment, Dr Michael Alexander is your guy. If you’re lucky, he might even deny a visit to “his” clinic because you don’t meet his wildcard criteria. He’s the headiest of them all: a Neurologist and a Psychiatrist w a so called specialty in concussions, yet grim attitude toward patient well being and success. I had the luxury of seeing the little fellow in 2012 after a serious car accident. I had been diagnosed with a concussion and was seeking follow up care. The doctor noted I had other medical conditions on record, which were admittedly complicated, and chose to spend the entire visit determining why indeed I was a head case and did *not* have a concussion, nor perhaps anything wrong with me in general. I already knew I had some diagnoses they had been trying to decipher for seven years, but that was not his role: He was a concussion consultant strictly for an accident two months prior. An accident for which he stated was… impossible for me to have had a concussion without loss of consciousness. I will add that peers and medical journals respectively disagreed with Dr. Alexander’s opine at that time, suggesting loss of consciousness was required. Fast forward to 2019 and two things have happened since I saw him last: 1. I had another concussion and my PCP and Neurologist wanted me to see a concussion expert to consider rehab. My PCP sent the request to Beth Israel, which is part of their hospital group. I asked them to include my records with updated conditions because I suspected I’d face a challenge with Dr Alexander. 2. The updates would have dismissed any concerns he had about my unusual symptoms in the past. In fact, he may have learned something new to aid his care with other patients as my final diagnosis was rare yet treatment has improved my quality of life significantly. Well, the lovely captain Alexander of the concussion clinic sent a handwritten fax back to my doctor stating: “Not here, No, Dr. ##. She has a Neurologist that follows her. We will never figure out what is concussion and what is everything else. Anyways, injury appears trivial." Way to be exclusionary in medicine. By the way, I’m medically disabled and this jerk just denied me access to care. So, your call on whether you can survive his ego...

I had a major head trauma. Dr. Alexander was extremely helpful and understanding.

I am so glad I read the reviews before scheduling an appointment with this doctor. The secretary who answered me was the rudest receptionist I have ever spoken to. She had a haughty tone to her voice. No compassion whatsover. She cut me several times while I was talking. I suddenly do NOT want to see this doctor who was referred to me by my primary doctor. I am not surprised to see all the negative reviews. I just wasted 2 hours registering in Beth Israel and looking up information on this doctor. To be seen by him, one has to go through several useless steps. Is that all Boston, supposedly the best place to find a doctor, has? He and his staff are a disgrace to the medical profession. It infuriates me that these people are making millions of dollars and they can't even do their job. Shame on this doctor and his staff!

I should have read the reviews online before I tried to make an appointment. Instead, I waited for weeks to hear back after faxing my daughter's medical records, left multiple messages, and finally got through -- only to be told, quite abruptly and rudely, that the doctor "was declining to see my daughter" because "that injury could not have caused a concussion." The admin assistant who answered the phone was rude and unhelpful, saying "I'm not a doctor so I don't have anything else I can tell you," that the doctor would not speak to me or to my daughter's physician, and offering no alternative. I honestly feel sorry for her, because after reading the online reviews, I realize that Dr. Alexander is just a conceited jerk who thinks he's too good to see most patients -- and she has to run interference for him. I am angry that I wasted a month trying to make an appointment at this office, but glad in the end that I wasn't able to go, because I gather that the appointment would have been a… terrible experience and a waste of time.

I only talked to the doctor on the phone, and it was a very negative experience. I was seeking helpo after a concussion. I told him that I experienced concussion aftereffects for several months (24 hour a day headaches, occasional dizzyness, slight memory problems) despite the fact that my concussion was initially termed mild, and the CAT scan (which he had looked at) showed no bleed. He spent all his time and energies on the phone complaining that the majority of patients seeking his expert help don't have a concussion at all, and that he is only interested in 'real" concussions. He said he would see me, but only because he wouldn't 'turn down any business,' but suggested I should see a headache specialist instead. When I complained that I never had headaches before I hit my head 5 months before the call, and now had them constantly, he was still uninterested in my case, and dismissive in tone. It was only after I hang upo that I realized he was, in a passive-aggressive way, telling… me muy concussion wasn't serious enough for him to take an interest in, and did not even fit his definition of a concussion. Talking to Michael Alexander was an insulting and frustrating experience.

I went to see Dr Alexander regarding brain trauma from a bicycle accident. I found him to be incredibly professional and he spent over 2 hours with me and my family. He discussed my injury at length and went through my scans, tested my sense of smell, conducted memory, mobility and cognitive tests. He also comes highly recommended by friends of mine who work in neurology and occupational therapy. If you want a doctor who is going to sugar coat your diagnosis he's not the right person to go to. He tells you like it is and will put you on the right path to recovery.

Yes, he's smart. Not sure exactly what his area of interest is, certainly not in patients' well being. Regret going.He glanced over my 2 page list of ongoing debilitating symptoms, and remarked " I see hundreds of people a week with these same symptoms>", dismissively, apathetically, punitively.Like, how dare you come into my practice with these mediocre symptoms as ifit is worth my precious time! I can't believe I sat there and persisted while he dominated, controlled, interrupted me compulsively every time i tried to answer a question. He needs a cognitive neurologist himself, or a psychiatric intervention.

He has very poor communication skills, does not seem to listen or be interested in patient....also impatient and cuts half hour appointments to 20 minutes repeatedly. Very discourageing when you desperately need help and don't know where to turn. He is very dismissive of concerns and addresses them in sarcastic manner. He should be in research and kept away from patients as I am sure he is very smart and would do more good with concepts.

Minimal follow-up on patient w. memory problems. Did not listen to patient who repeatedly mentioned inadeqate therapy for six months. Refused to talk with or involve family of single patient although he had full, unqualified permission from patient. Very cold, impatient and negligent in reviewing updated patient records.
