Dr. Michael James Champine, MD

The most uncaring, cold doctor we have ever visited. It really is a sad shame.

Within a few weeks after my total hip replacement by Dr. Champine I began to experience pain. Xrays showed that the prosthesis had moved. Dr. C stated that the textbook indicates that when that happens, it should be replaced, however he did not agree, and told me he felt it would rehab and be ok. When I continued to mention “quirks” with it, he stated it would never be like the hip God gave me. A couple of years later when I began to experience great pain in that hip, he was very condescending and told me there was nothing wrong with it, “it was sitting in the socket like it was supposed to be.” A second opinion and ultimate tests from a well respected UT Southwestern doctor showed the prosthesis was seriously infected, resulting in 3 additional surgeries and much rehab to recover. Infectious disease doctors said the original infection had been acquired during surgery Dr. C did, resulting in an additional bacteria and even more serious infection because it was never treated.

Dr C. told me I needed knee replacement and to go ahead & schedule now (bone-on-bone). Went back to my long-time orthopedic surgeon and he said, no, I don't need it right away (he said it was not yet bone-on-bone and showed me the xrays). Dr C is more aggressive and with shorter time-frames for injecting steroids than my more conservative doc. Dr C will do them every 2-3 mo. My former doc said every 4-5 mo. Dr C also seems more aggressive in doing surgery with fairly recent steroid injections. My former doc won't do surgery if one has had injections within last 6 months due to the high frequency of infection. To each his own, but I would rather be a little more conservative surgeon (coupled with one who listens to my concerns).

I'm sure Dr. Champine is a fine surgeon, however, I've never given much importance to "bedside manner" until now. If given the choice between a surgeon with a conservative professional persona or one with a dry and inappropriate sense of humor (Dr. C), I'll personally take the former. Dr. C literally asked his nurse a question with an expletive in front of me. I'm sure this website won't print it, but it happened. I've never been so shocked. Most importantly, during my appointment to schedule surgery, he was so condescending and literally laughed off my concerns (never answered - instead made a joke) - just told me to go on & get the surgery scheduled. He may not see this as serious (& he may be a very good surgeon), but the manner in which I was treated doesn't ensure I'm left with a lot of confidence in my after-care. I will go somewhere else

My left knee was replaced by Dr. Champine 3 1/2 years ago and I am still extremely satisfied. I would and have recommended him to friends who have had great results also. One was an 80 year old man who likes to hike the mountains of Colorado. 7 months after double knee replacement, he is able to hike over 2 miles in the mountains without having to stop and rest because of his knees. He’s the best as far as I am concerned.

Very disappointing results with a knee replacement and pain years after the proceedure. When the were problems he was non supportive and condesending I would not recommend him to anyone

15 months after surgery I am still extremely disappointed with my knee. It is swollen, stiff & warm to the touch. I have to do extreme knee bends and hold for 1-2 min throughout the day to function. I walk 2.0 miles 4-5 days/wk and feel no further progress at this point. It is better than the pain I had before surgery, but I expected a better functioning knee than I have. I was led to believe that it would be much better. I know several people who have had the same surgery by other doctors that have normal knee function now.

Our first meeting, 15 yrs ago, with Dr Mike came after meeting with 3 other Drs wanting to do a total my total right knee replacement. Dr Mike spent more time getting to know me, explaining the procedure, the rehab & the recovery than the other 3 combined. The procedure & the after program went as scripted. I have been a set appt to check my right knee once a yr in the follow up program for peace of mind. Dr Champine also did a total knee replacement on my left knee with the same fantastic results. I appreciate Dr Champine as my physician, however, I admire him as a friend & special human being!

He's a great M.D. and, like myself was educated at a great Texas school.

Dr. Champine did a total knee replacement for me in 2013. This new knee is better than it was when I was a teenager! It was a tough recovery but I pushed myself constantly and the outcome was "major success!" I now have the other knee that is failing and I will definitely see him again. I chose him from his many years of being the best of the best as voted by his peers in the Big D Magazine.
