Dr. Michael Chan, MD

Had a consultation with Dr. Chan and found him terribly unprofessional and incompetent. Extremely condescending and his attempts at being "reasonable" was just him continuing to be just as condescending while "explaining" why he's not being condescending. This is also how he 'deescalates' a conversation. Ironically, I'm sure he pretends he professionally "tried to 'deescalate' in the conversation with me, which he got my last name wrong -- multiple times, dismissed everything I was saying and continued to ignore what I said so he could continue to go on his 6th grade spiel about how MRIs show pictures we can see, so we can see if something isn't there. Obviously his expertise is in the field of neurological, and not applied psychology. For example, calling a patient by the wrong last-name 10 minutes into an appointment after already being open about how you feel he's coming off as condescending *after* the MRI tests were agreed upon and there's no medical reason to continue the… appointment might have been an attempt at connecting with the patient, so he could continue to monologue, but the actual effect was...uh... opposite. I don't think I need to explain why. Obviously, that was a mortal sin such that I'm not worthy of being able to get any medical treatment after waiting for a month. I didn't know my place. In essence, a full blown cripple shut-in continued to wait in agony for month for a consult with a neurosurgeon. He first said he would order a more specific MRI, and I was happy. Then he continued to do this condescending thing where he explains that MRIs can show a picture of something so you can prove or disprove it. I... agree, there's not much to disagree. However, he continues to explain this for like, 10 minutes as I explain I understand and he just continued like that, for 10 minutes, saying the same thing over and over. It was weird, because he already said he wanted the MRI, I wanted it, and he just wanted to go on this weird, long, pointless condescending rant, and when I explained I understood and am just happy for him to perform his tests and use his expertise, well, lets just say he wasn't happy with that. He wanted a condescending monologue and by god, he won't help you if you don't play along. This is a man who thinks as long as his voice is calm, he's being reasonable, regardless of the meaning of his words, or his actions. I figure if you have a ready to do, ready to bill, surgery where he can bill your insurance for a procedure, he'd probably be a more amiable fellow, but that's just speculation.

Both my husband and I were very impressed with the Doctor.

Dr. Chan was extremely patient with me and all of my questions. He went to great lengths to make sure I understood the procedure and was comfortable with it. This is how all Doctor's should interact with their patients! His Patient Care Coordinator was amazing as well! I feel very lucky to have his team doing my surgery and would definitely recommend him to people I care about.
