Dr. Michael Edward Makover, MD

To the person above: While I understand that you were in a frustrating situation, I think Dr. Makover's interest in your medication, which obviously poses a significant financial burden on you, was reasonable and thoughtful. I wish there were more "old timers" around who used interesting stories and analogies to explain things clearly to patients and make seeing the doctor a more pleasant experience. I have learned a great deal from Dr. Makover and he has helped me immensely.

I saw Dr. Makover because he is currently filling in for my current doctor who is on maternity leave. I have a condition that requires a prescription I have to call in every month and come to the office to pick up. This is normally a simple process and I always make a yearly checkup with my doctor to make sure everything is good concerning my treatment and my overall health.I recently called my prescription in but found that it had to be filled out by Dr. Makover, as he is filling in for my doctor. I came to pick it up after work two days after calling it in only to find out he hadn't gotten to it yet. According to the receptionist, he's an "old timer" and has to consult with patients before writing prescriptions. So, since it was a Friday and I was leaving town for three weeks for work, I told her I'd wait for him to get to it. After close to an hour wait, he finally got to me. He then proceeded to question my prescription, not my condition or why I needed it, followed by a… story on how a placebo once worked for a nine year old boy with the same prescription. He stated that he was saying this out of concern for my health and that he wanted to be sure I was getting the right treatment. I appreciated the concern but as I left, I realized that he didn't ask me about my condition really, only about my doctor history and a suggestion that it's fake and a placebo might work. I basically felt that he was trying to impose a strong bias against the medications I very truly need. I then felt like I was passively being accused of faking a condition that I desperately wish I didn't have nor need to go through the trouble of filling prescriptions for every month. He then agreed to give me the prescription for one month but said I had to make an appointment with him or another doctor before he would agree to write anymore. He gave me the prescription and I left.I went to the drugstore afterwords only to find out that he didn't fill in the right date and that it couldn't be filled.Bottom line: I like the idea of a doctor who wants to make sure a patient is getting the best treatment and I think, at least from the fact that he's written a book about it, that he thinks he is that doctor.But when you're temporarily filling in for another doctor and seeing her patients, is it right to question her treatments when they're working? Especially if it's vital to the patient that they get the medication they need on schedule? I do not think the date on the prescription was printed wrong on purpose but if he had spent a little more time checking his work instead of telling me that placebos work on children, I wouldn't currently be panicking several hundred miles out of New York City because I don't have my medication. It's sad for my original doctor because I'll have to go to someone else before she gets back and I doubt I'll bother going back to her after that. Also, I lost my insurance after being laid off not too long ago and am self employed, which is why I have to travel for work now. I already pay $120 a month for the prescriptions. I can't afford to make these extra doctor's appointments just so someone who doubts the medicine that's been working for me for around 10 years can prescribe a placebo.My opinion on Dr. Makover is that he should have more respect for the doctor he's filling in for and trust her treatments for her patients and maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to perhaps trust the patient as well.Seriously, I'm 27 years old and he's telling me that a placebo worked for a nine year old with the supposed "same condition" without asking one question pertaining to what my condition is and then can't write the prescription correctly. What else can I say?
