Dr. Michelle M. Backhaus grew up in Averill Park, New York (a suburb of Albany). She attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology in 2000. Thereafter, she attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia where she received her D.M.D. in 2003. While at Penn, she was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Matthew Cryer Dental Honor Societies and graduated at the top of her class.
After dental school, Dr. Backhaus continued her postgraduate studies at New York University and received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 2005. While at NYU, Dr. Backhaus spent time at Rose F. Kennedy Hospital, NYU Tisch Medical Center, Lutheran Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital.
Dr. Backhaus joined …Central Jersey Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in 2005 and is a member of numerous professional organizations, including, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the New Jersey Association of Pediatric Dentists, the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, the Middlesex County Dental Society and the American Academy of Laser Dentistry. Dr. Backhaus is also a member of the active attending dental staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and gives lectures for Babycare classes at St. Peter’s University Hospital. Dr. Backhaus is currently secretary for the New Jersey Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Backhaus is married to her colleague, Dr. Christopher Overcash and they reside in Monmouth County with their son Preston. When not in the office, Dr. Backhaus enjoys traveling, skiing, reading a good book and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Irvin B. Sherman ~ Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Sherman was born in Brooklyn, NY Completed HS at the McBurney School in New York City. Dr. Sherman went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Louisville in 1967. He followed this program by completing a Masters of Arts degree in Microbiochemistry at Hofstra University in 1968. Dental School followed in 1972 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Sherman received a MScD in Pediatric Dentistry at the Boston University of Graduate Dentistry in 1974.
Today, Dr. Sherman maintains a private practice in pediatric dentistry in East Brunswick, NJ which he began in 1976.
Dr. Sherman's is involved in a number of professional societies and affiliations including the positions of Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry since 1979 and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry also since 1979. He is a member of the ADA, AAPD, ASDC, NJDA, NJSDC, NJAPD, AAHD, AADH, AAO, SCCA.
Serving the broader community, since 1976 Dr. Sherman has been a  member of the active attending dental staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and St. Peter’s Medical Center. In addition, he is Chief – Section of Pediatric Dentistry at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Among academia he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at the Rutgers Medical School. He has held this position since 1980.
His leadership skills have been demonstrated in the positions of President of the New Jersey Academy of Pediatric Dentistry in 1980, 1985 and 1990. In 1983 he served as President of the New Jersey Society of Dentistry for Children.
