Dr. Mitchel Dean Storey, DO

I am a young, 24 y.o. woman who came in to receive care in the Fall of 2017 for my chronic back/neck pain brought on by a car accident in 2008. After looking at the x-rays I provided, Dr. Storey told me my pain was probably something that I was born with (which wasn't the case; the pain began in the years following the accident). He made me feel as though I couldn't possibly be experiencing the pain level I described. But, why was I surprised? According to Bodenheimer and Grumbach (2016), "women are 50% more likely than men to leave a physician because of dissatisfaction with care. Women report physicians talking down to them or being told that their problems were 'all in their head'" (p. 58). Alas, this was not a new experience for me. When I asked him for help with my pain, he told me in a condescending tone that I would have to do the work and he wouldn't be able to do it for me. Of course I'd be happy to do some exercises prescribed to me, but I was seeking help, and being spoken… down to like that was unnecessary and belittling. I made a follow-up appointment at the desk and later, went online to cancel because I was so disappointed with the care I received. I felt that Dr. Storey's ego got in the way of me receiving adequate care and his dismissal of my symptoms was disrespectful and unprofessional. Been going to Dr Storey for 30 years. He is 45 miles away, but worth the drive.
