Dr. Monica Wendy Atkinson, MD

We had a very confusing and frustrating discussion with this dr. We have a history of 4 missed miscarriages, all at different gestational ages. Now we're expecting again, and we had our first appointment with MFM which was rather confusing. Based on LMP I am 6w2d, but the ultrasound showed a gestational sac and a yolk sac measuring 6w0d and no heartbeat. Both my husband and I felt that dr. Atkinson was very rude and unclear in delivering her message. She basically said that she still considers this a viable pregnancy (even if there is no heartbeat) as it's measuring on time and that I should come back at 12 weeks. My heart stopped for the entire duration of the discussion. I was under the impression that a viable pregnancy is once embryo has a heartbeat ... and if it's too early you call us back in 1 or 2 weeks. That was the case for all previous pregnancies (when heartbeat was too slow). Despite saying she considers this viable, in her notes she said I need to follow up with my OB… for a possible miscarriage. We feel so confused and frustrated!! She also said in her note that I was frustrated my first US is with an APRN, which is not what I said at all. I was frustrated with her making me wait 6 more weeks, praying this will develop into a viable pregnancy. I have all my respect to APRNs who are always super nice to work with. So, her personal interpretation of my feelings was completely wrong. We have been seeing the MFM for 3 years now and they were always very nice and respectful. This was definitely a shocking experience. What is wrong with some doctors that show no empathy? Isn't it enough that life is treating you like cr*p by throwing at you all this?
