Dr. Monish Aron, MD

I am 72 years old and 15 years ago I had my left adrenal gland and an associated Pheochromocytoma tumor removed. Earlier this year my Pheo symptoms started to return and my regular doctor referred me to Dr. Aron at USC. Dr. Aron did some additional testing and confirmed that the Pheochromocytoma had returned in the left adrenal region, but had also metastasized in several other locations. Pheo tumors themselves are rare, but to recur is rarer still, and then to spread made this an extremely rare diagnosis. He immediately involved several other doctors (Oncologist, endochronologist, and radiation oncologist) at USC to get involved and to develop a treatment plan for this rare condition. The first step of the treatment plan was for Dr. Aron to surgically remove the tumor and a number of Pheo "nodules" in the left adrenal area, along with the left kidney. It was expected to be a difficult 5 hour surgery. Dr. Aron took an active lead in coordinating the other doctors as they developed… a total treatment plan, and kept me and my family well informed as the plan developed. The evening before the surgery Dr. Aron stayed late to review some complications revealed by the latest imaging tests he had done that afternoon. He gave us a detailed description of the latest complications and how those might affect the surgery. We went ahead the next morning and had a successful result. There are one or more surgeries by other doctors in the other affected areas in my near future, but this first one was a great success thanks to Dr. Aron. I am grateful for all the hard work and dedication that Dr. Aron has put into his years of education and work experience that allows him to perform such beneficial procedures. Dr. Aron and his staff did a great job of keeping us involved and informed as this whole process played out, and I am grateful to him for the success we have experienced so far in this process.

I did the radical prostatectomy (cut it out robotically) at USC Keck with Dr. Monish Aron. USC Keck is world class, and they usher you through the program with assistance at every turn (unlike Stanford). Aron (and the entire urology department) all defected from the Cleveland Clinic to USC several years ago for the weather and money. USC promised them the latest and best equipment, and they have the DaVinci robot for surgery. I remember being wheeled into the surgical suit, and I was anxious to see the DaVinci and watch them set it up. I don’t know who, or when, they slipped me the mickey, but the next thing I remember is hearing voices in the recovery room 6 hours later. The prostate was out, the catheter was in, and I was pretty groggy, but very little pain from the 5 separate .5 inch holes in my belly. Dr. Aron visited me at 7:45 PM to tell me the surgery went well, the prostate and lymph nodes came out clean, and we’ll know in a week if they got it all. If not, then we… decide what to do next. I expected to be up watching movies all night, but by midnight and I fell asleep until they woke me to draw blood at 6:00 AM. By 1:00 PM we are out of there and home to our little garden apartment in Pasadena for a weeks recovery. Day 2 I’m up and walking with some pain if I bend over. The catheter doesn’t hurt unless I pinch it the wrong way. I slept all night without waking up. Day 3. I slept well, the catheter is working fine, and I feel so good we might go to the movies. I hope to get the catheter out this Thursday or Friday, and, if the pathology comes out clean, this adventure is over. I am very satisfied with USC, Dr. Aron, and the entire team. I would highly recommend them to anybody.

I had Ileal Conduit surgery in April. It has changed my life! I was always getting infections, in and out of the hospital. I've gained weight and feel like a new person. Taking care of the stoma is very easy. I highly recommend this procedure and of course Dr. Aron!

My name is Manuel La Rosa and I am 57 years old. In 2010, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My initial urology doctor informed me that it was okay to only do radiation because I was still young. Six years later, in March 2016, I was feeling constant severe pain on my lower back. I made an appointment with a different urology doctor, who ordered a series of laboratory tests. He informed me that there was an abnormality in my CT Scan but reassured me that it was not connected to prostate cancer. Two months later when I went for a follow-up appointment, I found out that my urology doctor had retired, and I did feel as though I was left hanging, unsure of my condition. The severe pain on my lower back was still coming and going, so I decided to go back to my primary internal physician (early 2017), who referred me to another urology doctor, who then highly recommended Dr. Monish Aron. When I first met Dr. Aron, he reviewed my case and ordered new tests. The test results showed that… there was something suspicious in my pelvis so he ordered the Axumin test, which was denied by my insurance. Dr. Aron and his team were very assertive and spoke with my insurance about the necessity of the Axumin test. Shortly after, the authorization for the Axumin test was approved by my insurance. The Axumin test showed that the prostate cancer came back and had metastasized to my pelvis, bladder, and a small part of my right ureter. Dr. Aron and his team educated and prepared me for my surgery/procedure: robotic radical cystoprostatectomy, bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection, and ileal conduit (conversion after removal of my bladder). I am happy to say that the surgery was successful because of Dr. Aron's proficient skill and knowledge in this type of procedure & that I am on my way to a full recovery. Dr. Monish Aron was there for me throughout this significant challenge in my life. I wanted to take the time to tell my story, recommend Dr. Monish Aron, and write a review for him because he helped me feel optimistic and secure when I was at my lowest. He also did everything he can to guide me towards a successful surgery and recovery. It took a series of doctors but I will always be grateful that I was led to Dr. Aron, as I feel like he saved my life. Dr. Aron is honest, compassionate, always prepared for a challenge, a problem-solver, and an exceptional patient advocate. If I could give him more than 5 stars on this review, I would! Dr Monish Aron was able to do a robotic surgery on my R kidney from the back . This was a surgery that my first Dr wasn't able to do and he was good enough to refer me to Dr Aron. The surgery went very well and I'm three weeks out and feeling very good . I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of a highly skilled surgeon with a very attentive and professional staff.

Dr. Monish Aron epitomizes everything you would want your Doctor to be. Simply put, he saved my life in 2015. I've spent the last 8 years in the Healthcare Industry calling on Physicians for a living, so I've interacted with thousands of Doctors across various specialties. I haven't any that are better than Dr. Aron. He is not only one of the best surgeons in the Country, but the level of care and concern he shows for each of his patients makes him uncommon. In early 2015, I felt a pain in my right kidney like no other pain I had ever felt before. The initial specialist I was referred to, rushed to judgement and immediately wanted to operate. He didn't truly know whether the mass in my kidney was a tumor or a hematoma, but wanted to take it out. It just didn't seem right. I sought a 2nd opinion and someone I have great respect for referred me to Dr. Aron. Dr. Aron immediately came across as special. He fought with my insurance company to allow for additional scans… that they were denying. He wanted to make absolutely certain before removing an organ from my body that he had every justification to do so. Those additional scans were critical for that determination. He realized that i was only 46 years old and potentially had a lot of life left ahead of me, so he took every step possible to avoid surgery. To me that says everything about his overall character and his desire to do the right thing by the patient. As time progressed, it became evident that surgery was inevitable. The additional testing he requested confirmed I had a tumor in my kidney and that the kidney needed to be removed. That is where his world class skills as a surgeon saved my life. What was supposed to be a 4 hour surgery turned into 7.5, due to complications. Had he not been my surgeon, I can confidently say, I may not be alive today. The damage in my kidney that none of the scans revealed was so substantial, that a less experienced surgeon might not have been able to make the necessary adjustments that Dr. Aron did. Equally impressively, as the complications occurred ,he kept my family informed each step of the way in an effort to alleviate any anxiety they had. He was detailed and specific in his recovery plan both in the immediate days that followed in the hospital, but also once I returned home. The level of respect that the nurses and other hospital staff have for Dr. Aron, is yet another testament to the type of Doctor he is. As time has progressed, Dr. Aron has continued to impress. His follow-up care of me as a Cancer Patient has been exceptional. He is dogmatic in his commitment to insuring everything that can be done within his power to give me a normal length of life, will be done. Beyond that, whenever I reach out to him requesting referrals of Physicians in other specialty areas for my friends/family, he always responds same day. I'm eternally grateful to him and his entire team. Anyone with significant urological issues would be well served to put their care in his extremely capable hands.
