Nicholas Samstag, Ph.D.Clinical Psychologist / PsychoanalystPsychotherapy and Psychoanalysis are potentially useful ways to connect more productively with the myriad challenges of what it means to be human. The patients I work best with are curious about how to change their current behavior to reduce psychological difficulties, as well as to address how their prior history has influenced their current situation. I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and a certificate in psychoanalysis from the William Allison White Institute. In addition, I have also completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.While I am always respectful of the patient's presenting problem, I am also interested in what underlies it. I encourage the exploration of unconscious processes, dreams, and free associations, for the purpose of unearthing the patient's historical narrative. I ask a lot of questions, and consider a multitude of viewpoints.Complementing my professional education is a …strong background in classics and literature, that richly informs my work. To me, the person is always an individual first, regardless of psychological disturbance.
