Dr. Patricia Susan Mikes, MD

My 62 year-old special needs sister developed lung and breathing issues that were debilitating. Visits to various doctors didn’t provide any clarity on the worsening problem and she was put on oxygen, 24 hours a day. After receiving a referral to Dr. Patricia Mikes, everything began to turn around. Dr. Mikes’ experience and excellent diagnostic skills isolated the problem and she created an individualized health plan for my sister. Dr. Mikes was very engaged, thorough and patient with my sister. Now, 18 months later, my sister is completely off oxygen (something that I never thought could happen) and her lungs seem stronger than before she developed the issue. Our family is incredibly grateful to Dr. Mikes for her expertise and determination to help my sister improve her respiratory function and in turn, have a better quality of life. Her expertise, patience and plan of care exceeded all of our hopes and expectations.

I saw Dr. Mikes for a follow-up visit after a pulmonary embolism. I can't say enough about how impressed I was. She gave me her full attention, I never felt rushed, and she took time to answer all my questions. I felt like she genuinely cared about me and my situation. I have complete confidence in her. Dr Mikes is an excellent physician. I have an illness which affects my lungs & I saw her to evaluate my breathing because as my lung CTs showed improvement, I was still experiencing worsening shortness of breath. I conveniently had a test right in her office & her assistant Jay was a great coach during the process. After Dr Mikes analyzed those results, we had our 1st visit, same day. She asked a ton of questions & was very holistic in her approach to figuring out what was going on. And she was spot on. I went on my way with her recommendations, did everything she said & returned a month later for a follow up. My breathing improved drastically over the month & I'm basically good to go. She seems to genuinely care about her patients & their lives. She's the first Dr I've had that has had that seemingly intuitive/holistic mindset & it makes such a difference. Her practice is small & independent which is a plus. It feels warm & comfortable, you're not rushed, she's not rushed.

I was referred to Dr. Mikes when presenting with symptoms of breathlessness, and she jumped right in. I received varying diagnoses of pulmonary embolism (later retracted), pulmonary fibrosis, and started down a path of exploring suspicious nodules in my lungs when the true cause of my issues became apparent: I had a stroke. Turns out, my issues were with my heart. In all the tests she ran me through, neither Dr. Mikes nor her sister identified my heart arrhythmia- they made the assumption the problem was my lungs. Several of the tests could have flagged my atrial fibrillation, but no one ever caught it or mentioned it to me if they did. In fact, the prescribed inhaler likely exacerbated my arrhythmia: it's the exact wrong course of action to take. I do not recommend Dr. Mikes.

I was referred to Dr. Mikes from a doctor who practices at a different hospital. The other doctors/specialists I was seeing were only concerned about their specialty (lungs) and watching their watch to see if my time was up. Dr. Mikes not once looked at her watch in my presence. Not only did Dr. Mikes focus on my lung issues, she asked about all of my health issues to see if any of those issues or 16 medications I take could be affecting my lungs. In fact, Dr Mikes asked me to bring in all of my lung history records which filled a large shopping bag. Not only did she go through all the paper work lung records I brought to her by her request, she also on her own looked up all my health issues from the last couple years at three other hospitals I had been going to through "My Chart". I know she read all my records because she asked me about issues I forgot about. Dr. Mikes has made it possible for me to breathe again without going into hyperventilation from just going up a flight of… stairs or walking across the street to get my mail. If you are looking for a great pulmonologist I highly recommend Dr. Patricia Mikes who has an office in downtown Chicago and an office in Hinsdale, IL. Dr. Mikes' secretary Jay was very accommodating getting me an appointment and also a pleasure to be deal with. I wish I had met Dr. Miikes years earlier so I would not of been misdiagnosed by other doctors and hospitals and almost died from pulmonary embolisms. Marc Arquilla, Burr Ridge, IL

After my first(and only) meeting with Dr. Mikes I left 3 messages for her to call me to discuss my test results and that I was not making any improvement with her recommendations for treatment. NO CALL BACK IN OVER 3 WEEKS! I was able to get in to see another Pulmonologist, also connected with Northwestern, who completely disagreed with Dr. Mike's diagnosis and has put me on the right path for treatment. Any doctor might make a mistake in a diagnosis(she claimed I wasn't asthmatic yet I have been treated successfully for asthma for many, many years) but to not call a patient back to discuss her lack of progress and to answer questions about test results is inexcusable. She also has no office back up with the exception of someone(her sister?) who runs her office and is very surly. I have never had such a poor experience with someone affiliated with Northwestern Hospital. I would give her no star if this survey allowed.

Dr. Mikes and her office staff gets an unqualified and my highest recommendation. I suspect that the one star recommendations all come the same person - and note that I have not experienced any of "her" complaints.

Dr. Mikes is an extraordinary Doctor who truly cares about her patients. She listens carefully, and makes sure she gives you the time needed to addressed your issue. Her staff is also Excellent. The breathing test they give you Is thorough but can be difficult if you have breathing issues, yet her team is excellent and they will work with you to get you through it so they can get the proper data to help you. Dr . Mikes is very patient. She gave me time to tell her about my condition without checking her watch for time, or typing on a laptop. I never felt rushed; I was given her full attention. She listened and asked questions. After testing, which was conveniently done in her offices by her competent, personable associate, Jaye Mikes, who explained and demonstrated all facets of the testing, I met with Dr. Mikes again. She discussed my condition and diagnosis, told me of procedures that would help, which ones she wanted me to try and why those were selected. She answered questions I had not known to ask. When medications were prescribed, changed or discontinued, she gave reasons why. I followed the procedures Dr. Mikes gave me and within a few days, my condition was MUCH better. I felt really great and still do. In the past, several times every year, I was in the emergency room with breathing problems. Since I've been Dr. Mikes patient I have not had a single visit to… emergency. I could not be more pleased with Dr. Mikes, she is a pleasant person and it is a pleasure to work with her on my health problems. She cares about her patients. If you are looking for a Pulmonary Specialist, Dr. Mikes is the one you want.
