Summary

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I joined the large neurosurgery/neuroradiology department in the Spring of 2006 as the director of neuro-intensive care at Kaiser Sacramento Medical Center.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I became a doctor to help people and to make a difference. I am fortunate to be a part of the 'everyday miracles' that we witness at the Kaiser Sacramento Comprehensive Neuroscience Center. Recently I visited a woman and friend whose baby is now 10 pounds and healthy when she returned to the hospital for a follow up test. Six months earlier, an ambulance had brought her to our center in a coma. She was pregnant. She had a severe cerebral hemorrhage due to a ruptured arteriovenous malformation AVM. A team of brain surgeons, neuro-intensivists, interventional neuroradiologists, neuroscience nurse specialists, and many others worked shoulder-to-shoulder to help her when the ambulance arrived on that day. I like practicing Medicine at the Kaiser Sacramento Comprehensive Neuroscience Center because I have the full confidence that we have the best team to help patients with these types of challenging problems to survive and recover. It is a wonderful feeling to talk to this new mother about the joy she has for her family and the life she sees ahead of her.

On a Personal Note…

I grew up largely in a small town, Walden, Tennessee, on a sandstone mountain above Chattanooga and the Tennessee River Valley WaldensRidge. In these small communities, people work out their problems and look out for each other. If we borrowed our neighbor's pick up truck, my father made sure we returned it cleaner than we found it and full of gas. My neighbors planted peaches, so we planted apples. There was plenty to share with each other and the deer. On Friday nights, the community center was 'open mike' for local musicians, and admission was free. The music was not bad if you like bluegrass, since many who performed had won national competitions in guitar, banjo, and fiddle.

I love the power of people working together, whether it be in a community, church, family, musical group, or something much larger and structured.
