Dr. Paul Henri LaMarche Sr, MD

I don't know of any doctor (or man) that I admired more than Dr. LaMarche. He not only cared deeply for his patients, but also the patient's family. Many years ago when he was treating our children for juvenile diabetes, our 10-year old daughter got chicken pox. She was so sick, vomiting, and going into insulin shock. We took her to the Millinocket Hospital where an orthopedic surgeon was the on-call ER doctor. He admitted that he didn't know how to treat a young diabetic patient who repeatedly went into shock. Most doctors who don't specialize in diabetes would know how to treat it -- they can diagnose it, but not treat it. He tried to get her admitted to EMMC in Bangor but the new tower was under construction and no private rooms were available (she needed private because of the chicken pox). She grew progressively worse during the night, even with the ER doctor getting telephone instructions from Dr. LaMarche. Then, a nurse came in and said she had just gotten a call from… the state police asking her to verify that Dr. LaMarche was responding to an emergency in Millinocket. He'd been speeding. Dr. LaMarch drove 80 miles to Millinocket (the interstate only went as far as Howland at that time). He stayed with our daughter all night, until the crisis was over. He never charged us anything......said he just got a new car and was able to break it in. That was the kind of doctor and man he was. This was only one story I could tell you about him.....there were many more. I loved that man and that doctor.
