Dr. Paulo Monteiro, MD

I first saw Dr. Monterio in 1995 and had back surgery with him. I was very scared but came through it fine and then in 2006 I had to have another back surgery and of course I wanted Dr. Monterio to do it and I came through that surgery doing great also. And I have to add he did surgery on my son-in-law and he has done great. He is the most caring and compassionate Physician I have ever come across and he really shows that he cares about his Patient's. It is now 2022 and I am seeing him again and there is no doubt that the outcome will be good. I highly recommend Dr. Monterio.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting this fabulous individual while being treated for a stroke at Baptist downtown. He is an excellent doctor. Very personable, witty and knows his stuff. I would highly recommend him if you are seeking a great neurologist

I’ve seen Monteiro several times and had 1 surgery. I know many people that he’s helped, but bedside manner is unthinkable. Last time I saw him for a procedure, he was 2 hours late and took out his frustration on me and the nurses. I’ve been in his waiting room probably 5 times and have always had a 2-3 hr wait. I’ve found a new neurosurgeon for my latest surgery and So far, he’s nice and hasn’t ordered a ton of expensive test. I agree with the past patients who said run.

Dr Monterio required my MRI before scheduling. His scheduler then phoned me saying I don’t require immediate surgery and that he has then refused to see me. Very poor patient care and very rude. I Was referred to him by the ED of a hospital he is affiliated with.

Waited 4 and a half hours with an L1 compression fracture for the Lyerly Neurosurgery physician to look at my x-rays and tell me what I need to do. Finally, I was sent home with a prescription for pain killers by the emergency department and instructions to contact Dr James Lyerly for a follow-up appointment immediately. I called as soon as I got home and again later that afternoon. After 5 calls over 3 days, I got hold of an actual person at Lyerly Neurosurgery, who explained that Dr James Lyerly could not have been the surgeon who charged my insurance for reading my x-rays and directed me to Dr. Monteiro. I left a message for Dr. Monteiro’s scheduler (who was not available) asking for an appointment with Dr Monteiro as soon as possible. I did not receive a return call. I spent 3 more days trying to contact Dr. Monteiro’s scheduler without luck and started leaving messages with other schedulers in order to get someone to call me back. Seven days of calling multiple times a day… finally resulted in my talking to another scheduler who informed me that I needed to get an MRI before an appointment could be scheduled with a Lyerly Neurosurgeon. How could I possible know that I had to get an MRI when no one would call me back? Why was an MRI not ordered while I waited without pain medication in the emergency depart for 4 and a half hours? Why was I sent home without having an MRI? Why was I sent home with no instructions from the neurosurgeon?

In the first place, the glory goes to God. Secondly, my precious Dr Monteiro. This man worked on me for 10.5 hours and the out come has been tremendous! I trust this man with my life. I can't say enough good about this wonderful surgeon. He is brilliant, compassionate, caring, and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs the very best.

Ruined my life.

Horrible time scheduling, always late, rude contemptuous staff, condescending bedside manor, not time for patients, won't admit mistakes, ruined my life for the last 2 years. Stay away at all costs.

Wonderful, kind, conscience, excellent physician. I known him for 25 years with two surgeries by him. Both experiences were good experiences.

Dr. Monteiro is our hero! He performed a very very difficult procedure with elegant technique and genuine caring. He was able to restore a quality of life that would have been lost without his intervention. He is a man with a gift for healing the body and the spirit.
