Dr. Pearay L Ogra, MD

Dr. Ogras career in academic medicine began in the early 1960s and he has continued to have a major impact, on the diverse aspects of disease prevention and vaccine development. His research , administrative and academic leadership has largely focused on research and clinical training and program development in several areas of human viral infections, vaccine development and mucosal immunity.

To date, he has published over 400 original papers and review articles, and 18 full-length books and monographs, including the first 2 editions of the first comprehensive textbook of Mucosal Immunology. The latest edition of this text was dedicated to him by the current editors.

During his investigative career, he has trained over 75 post-doctoral fellows and PhD students in Microbiology and Immunology and has been involved in the training of over 1000 Pediatric residents both in New York and in Texas Dr Ogra has continued to remain active in the laboratory as well as in the clinical aspects …Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases .

Dr Ogra has been elected to the membership many prestigious national and international scientific societies, including, The Association of American Physicians, The Royal Society - Medicine , The American Society for Clinical Investigation and over 30 other scientific societies. He received the E. Mead Johnson Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Stockton Kimball Award from the State University of New York for outstanding scientific contributions in pediatrics, and Kalhana Award from Kashmir cultural and Scientific society . More recently April 2006 he was honored as the Scholar- in- residence at the International vaccine Institute, a United Nations Chartered Institute , based in Seoul, Korea.

Dr Ogra has served on several national and international advisory panels. These include , the World Health Organization, Study Sections of the National Institutes of Health, Advisory Boards of the Laboratory for Clinical Investigation - NIAID, National Institute of Environmental Health Science - NIH, US Armed Forces Research and Development Command, Maternal and Child Health Research Committee at NICHHD, and the advisory committees of several international congresses, FDA Committee on Vaccines and WHO Steering Committee on Measles and Acute Respiratory Diseases. He has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. He has also served as the Chairman of the Board, International Pediatric Research Foundation, Inc., which is responsible for publication of "Pediatric Research" journal.

Currently, Dr Ogra serves as a member of the scientific advisory Board of the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, and as the Chairman of the External review advisory group for mucosal vaccine development program MUVAPRED of the European Union. He devotes significant amount of his effort in the field in South Asia towards the control of vaccine preventable diseases of the poor, such as, Influenza, TB, Malaria, Cholera, and other enteric and respiratory diseases.
