Dr. Peter Fung, MD

My mother was admitted to El Camino Hospital for an apparent stroke where Dr. Fung was one of the attending neurologists. After initially meeting him in the ER, I was quite impressed. However, after more than a week, a definitive diagnosis had yet to be made, due to my mother moving during the attempted MRIs. Dr. Fung pulled me aside one evening and told me that my mother had dementia, was not responding to treatment and would die. I was a bit shocked since we still had no actual diagnosis. Dr. Fung told me the issue could be a clot, a stroke or a tumor and since it the issue was not known, no treatment course could begin. I asked about attempting an MRI under anesthesia as a next option. This was performed the next morning under the care of another neurosurgeon. The issue was then quickly identified as an ischemic stroke, due to a clot in her brain. The other neurosurgeon clearly explained the issue and the recommended treatment (blood thinner) and the associated risks. We… decided to begin treatment that day and since that time my mother is recovering, regaining some use of her right arm and leg. Dr. Fung did not seem to be interested in diagnosing the cause of my mother's issue and was content that telling me that my mother would die with the issue undiagnosed. I am grateful to the other neurosurgeon for getting involved.

Needs to understand people better and his staff needs to be less arrogant.
