Dr. Peter Joseph F Macander, MD

Peter J. Macander, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C. is a native of Buffalo, New York, where he graduated from Canisius College with a B.A. degree in Biology in 1976. He earned an M.S. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1977. Dr. Macander is a graduate of the Medical Academy of Wroclaw (formerly Breslau), Poland, a prestigious old European institution he attended on a Kosciuszko Foundation scholarship. He completed the traditional six-year curriculum in five years and received the M.D. degree on June 23, 1982. In 1987, he returned to his medical alma mater to become the first American and the first graduate in his medical school class to earn a Ph.D. degree in the Medical Sciences with honors.

He served his Internship at Oakwood Medical Center (an affiliate of the University of Michigan Medical School) in Dearborn, Michigan, from 1982-83 and completed Residency in Internal Medicine there in 1986. He graduated from Fellowships in Cardiology at Detroit?s Henry Ford …Hospital in 1988 and Invasive Cardiology at the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics at Augusta in 1989. He completed a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, under internationally renown interventional pioneer Dr. Gary S. Roubin, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medical Center in 1991. Dr. Macander has acquired additional competence in peripheral vascular angiography and interventions at the Galichia Heart Hospital since 2004.

In private practice since 1991, Dr. Macander was an interventional cardiologist at the Jefferson City, Missouri area hospitals (1991-97) before coming to Kansas. He developed the first coronary stent program in Missouri?s capital city and placed the first coronary stents in the six-state SSM Hospital System at St. Mary?s Health Center in 1993. In 1997, he was appointed Chief of Cardiology Services at The Hertzler Clinic, P.A., and served as Director of the Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Hertzler Regional Medical Center in Halstead. He joined the Galichia Medical Group, P.A. and Galichia Heart Hospital medical staff on November 1, 2001. He currently practices as a staff interventional cardiologist at the Galichia Heart Hospital, Via Christi Regional Medical Center - St. Francis and St. Joseph campuses, and Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

To date, Dr. Macander is author or co-author of thirty-eight medical/scientific articles in medical journals. He has served as an editorial consultant to the interventional cardiology journal CATHETERIZATION AND CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS since 1994. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine, is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and holds memberships in the Kansas Medical Society and the Medical Society of Sedgwick County. He has been a featured guest on the weekly Saturday morning radio program ?Take Your Health to Heart? broadcast on KNSS AM 1330 in Wichita and heard throughout Kansas. He is fluent in both English and Polish.

In addition to adult Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Macander?s interests include coronary, peripheral vascular and carotid angiology, angiography, and endovascular catheter-based therapeutics. His expertise includes coronary and peripheral balloon angioplasty, stenting, excimer laser angioplasty, directional and transluminal extraction atherectomy and intravascular ultrasound.
