Dr. Peter F Merkle, MD

I have had many occasions, to visit Dr. Merkle (3 surgeries, cast, etc.). His knowledge and caring are unsurpassed! His staff is excellent: friendly, professional, and kind. I highly recommend Dr. Merkle!

It started in the ER when our 88 year old mother had fallen and broken her wrist and saw Dr Merkle there. He was pulling the fingers of her injured wrist telling her that it didn’t hurt him as she winced in pain. He wrapped her wrist and told her to come to his office for a cast in a week. When she got there she was told he was out of town and that they had called her. She does not leave her condo and had no calls. They made another appointment time and when she arrived with my sister was told she did not have an appointment even though she had an appointment card. They made her wait to see the doctor and when he was fitting her with a cast she moved and he harshly told her to “stop moving”! When my sister tried to tell him that she had never broken anything before his reply was atrocious! “She’ll be back again with another broken arm or a hip!! To treat a senior citizen this way who has worked their entire life is discounting the value of their life. If this is the way this… physician treats seniors he should seriously consider changing his profession where he is not near people.

If I could give more than five stars, I would. In my opinion Dr. Merkle has been absolutely phenomenal. I have nothing bad to say about this doctor. He treated my son regarding a fall from 60 feet onto concrete with just two broken feet in multiple places. My son, an adult requested his privacy with the doctor and we certainly complied with that request, but Dr. Merkle convinced our son to include us on certain things. We did appreciate that. He is extremely professional, courteous, and has a great bedside manner. He tells it like it is and knows exactly what he’s talking about. He makes us all feel very comfortable and speaks to us so we can thoroughly understand him. My family would highly recommend Dr. Peter Merkle to anyone who needs a Trauma Surgeon.

I was brought into the hospital by ambulance so I had no choice but to use Merkle to repair my ankle since he was the only orthopedic surgeon on duty. He was incredibly arrogant and rude. I believe that he made some some type of mistake during my surgery because my ankle now points to the outside more than it did prior to the accident and it hurts so much I still need to take painkillers even though It's been a year since surgery. To be fair to Merkle, I waited this long following surgery before I posted this review because I wanted to give my ankle every chance in the world to get better. Unfortunately, at this point, any further progress seems unlikely. There is one other point I want to make. Three weeks after Merkle's staff casted my ankle and lower leg, I told Merkle that the cast was too tight because it was rubbing against the inner part of my ankle bone. Merkle cut out a rectangular piece of the cast that had been over my ankle. After he did so, we could see that… the inside of the cast was wet with some type of yellow discharge. I assumed that Merkle would remove the cast so that we could see what the rest of my leg looked like. Unfortunately he simply taped the cut-out back onto the cast. Three weeks later when he removed the cast he immediately put my leg into a pneumatic boot so that I didn't get a good look at my leg while I was in his office. It was only when I went to bed that night and removed the boot that I could see that my leg was covered with enormous blisters and open wounds. I was admitted to the hospital a few hours later where we began an intensive round of IV antibiotics. Although, the infection seemed to go away, it came back with a vengeance 6 months later and I was hospitalized yet again for another round of IV antibiotics. I take full responsibility for not going to see another orthopedic surgeon when I saw how wet and discolored the cast was when Merkle cut out the small piece of cast. Unfortunately, I assumed that Merkle knew more about my leg than me. This was a terrible mistake on my part. In my defense, I was confined to an electric wheelchair and it wasn't easy to get around.

Merkel is a beast. He did a foot ankle fusion that needed 2 additional surgeries for my foot to properly hit the floor. He’s also very mean. A great surgeon @ Holy Cross Hospital fixed Merkle’s mistakes but it took 2 additional surgeries.

Top notch! Dr. Merkle is great, hos staff is awesome, and I don't think there's a better trauma surgeon in Fl, possibly the US.

I am a new paitent 40 years professional athlete. I have been suffering a long time. I feel great and hopeful working with Dr Merkel and his wonderful staff.

Merkle saw my brother in the hospital and was very rough with him from the beginning. We made a follow up appointment & upon arrival, the rude receptionist told us that they could not see him because they don’t have any records that they saw him at the hospital. After having the hospital call them, they finally agreed to see him. We waited for over 45 minutes. Patients that came in after us were called in before us. When Merkle finally came in the room, he told my brother to raise his leg as high as he could, which he did. He then took his injured leg and pushed it all the way up and pushed his other leg roughly out the way. My brother was in tears (for the first time) because of merkle. He then told him to put back on his brace by himself when he can’t even move. I then got up and told him I will put the brace on, not to worry about it. Merkle threw all his “professionalism” out the window and told us he does not want to see us. He kicked me out of the room & closed the door on my… toe. The office manager came and was also very nasty and did not want to hear what i had to say. Worst experience I have ever had at any professional office.

Dr Merkle I was able to fix the unfixable on me. He rebuild my pelvis May 4th 2015 with three screws involved.. and now May 30th he repaired my tibia and fibula which were broken in two places with a rod and 13 screws.. it's been 22 days and I'm already walking with a walker.. which I never imagined would have been so quickly..
