Good at what he does but poor bed side manner

I am all about how a Dr. approaches the patient as a fellow human being and in helping us, the patient, to come to terms with our medical problems. He is poor, very poor, at helping to explain cause and effect and alternative approaches to treating afflictions. Also, when dealing with side effects from medication, he simply marks it off, as if he is cataloging infomation for the drug manufacturer and that I am simply a statistic. Instead, I want to know if there are other treatments. I read that he is from NY, perhaps this might have something to do with his personality. If you meet with him, expect him to have his head buried in his laptop taking notes and to get one sentence (if you are lucky) responses. I am on the fence with regards to him being a good doctor. He might be if he takes time and warms up his bedside manner and be willing to talk with his patients, not at them.
