Dr. Philip Mcwhorter’s expertise is not just surgery...he listens! I was so impressed by his explanation of how my injury impacted my body and what was my course for healing. He is top notch.

I had an appendectomy last Sunday at Greenwich Hospital. The hospital and staff were great (very attentive and concerned for my well being) but I was very disappointed in Dr. Phil Mcwhorter. What I thought was going to be a great relationship with the doctor turned out to be an unpleasant experience. Listening skills, communication and instructions from the doctor and his office were lacking and he was very aloof and non empathetic. He arrived more than 3 hours late looking dapper in his suit but with no update or explaination. Then ordered a second CAT scan. While I appreciate the thoroughness, by that time I was doubled-over crying in pain and had a migraine (from going an extended period of time without being able to keep food or water down) which exacerbated the problem, I was in tremendous pain which seemed of no concern to the doctor nor did it prompt a sense of urgency for him. There is too much to tell here but after the surgery he did not send me home from the… hospital with medication for pain. I guess He has swung the pendulum too far with the opioid crisis and it made for a very long and highly uncomfortable week for me after having the operation to remove the inflamed appendix. In order to remove the organ an incision was made through my stomach muscles, it was taken out, and stitches used to close it up. I was told to do minimum activity and no exercise for the next six weeks and limit carrying to less than 10 pounds for the rest of the month. This was not a light procedure! When I called his office to talk about the amount of pain and the frustration with the lack of communication from the doctor’s office the woman who answered the phone said absolutely nothing. She just sat there while I talked and offered no feedback or concern. She did not say one word in response. She showed the same lack of professionalism and empathy as the doctor. Since she did not respond to the information that I was telling her, I expected at very least, a call back from Dr. Mcwhorter. The operation was last Sunday and I have still not heard from him in follow-up. As much as I hate to take the time to write this I feel like others should know what to expect if they call on Phil McWhorter. I know if I had the choice all over again, I would go to a doctor who shows empathy and listens to his patients. It’s seemed to me and my family that he has been practicing too long and has become desensitized.

Doctor Mcwhorter performed this surgery twice on me within fourteen years apart. Once on the left side of my abdomen and once on the right side. It takes time to recover, some longer than others. After three weeks after having the surgery, I have resumed playing golf again with no pain. Thank you Doctor Mcwhorter!
