My husband had acute alcoholic hepatitis. This was all new to us as he had never had any prior liver issues before. Dr. Shah saw him numerous times in the hospital in Texas. His bedside manner was awful, he was cold. Basically told us from the beginning that he had no chance, when we were discharging back home (we were out of state at the time) he came in said my husband would need a liver transplant and said “goodluck.” Nothing else, no explanation, no recommendations, no referrals. My husband, my in laws and my entire family including myself were in complete shock and grief. Not only traumatized by the news but also the complete disregard for my husband’s health/life by a physician. So I took him back home to our Magnet hospital in our home state. I told them in the ER that he needed a liver transplant, the GI/hepatologists there looked at us like we were crazy. Not only did they tell us he didn’t need a transplant, that this one episode would resolve with continued cessation and… most likely leave no liver damage at all. A year later, no cirrhosis (or any liver disease) and definitely no need for a transplant, just emotional trauma and disbelief linger.
