Dr. Rafael Tatay, MD

This was my experience with him years ago at Bryan West- he may do better now. I just want people to be aware to look out for signs he may still be operating this way, so they don't fall for it.

Saw him back in 1989, and I see things haven't changed with this guy over the years. I have major depression, and my three previous doctors agreed with this diagnosis. I merely needed a new antidepressant, but HE insisted I was bipolar instead, and put me in the psycho ward on Lithobid. Well, Lithobid proved TOXIC for me (namely because I'm NOT bipolar), and I became so weak, I could barely walk. When I fell into depression, he finally woke up and put me on an antidepressant. It took months for me to get my strength back (whereas he insisted I should recover within 24 hours). Office visits were extremely unsatisfactory (one reason being his very thick accent), but he always appeared to be merely daydreaming through the unnecessary sessions so he could collect the insurance money. His behavior was extremely manic (inappropriately bursting into wild laughter when entering my hospital room and seeing me merely sitting quietly in my bed, writing in my journal). I wasn't his only… patient with these opinions. I think HE needs the Lithobid.

I haven't spoken to him in 3 years. All he has does is lie and he was always very abusive towards me. Don't believe a word this man says. He is completely crazy and I wont ever allow my son around him. He was supposed to have retired by now but due to financial problems he isn't able to. I hope he loses his home.

Kept calling me by another name even though I've been under his care for over a year. Changed my diagnosis and took me off meds. Seems to be very unknowledgeable about mental illness and substance abuse. Wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy!

Lacks all tact, professionalism. Asserts a subjective opinion about you without even taking the time to properly evaluate you as individual or the circumstances regarding your mental state. Disappointed in quality of care I received. I acted like a robot in order for him to transfer my care to another doctor and to get away from him. I would not recommend him to anyone.

Extremely and consistently late. He gave a very unclear diagnosis and was VERY quick to hand out serious and potentially very harmful medications like candy to my child. Overall terrible expirence.

I was a patient of Dr. Tatay's for about 6 months. I had a horrible experiences. He was chronically late, one time I was waiting for an hour when he was standing outside the office talking to someone else not even in an appointment. When I asked him about it he tried to blame the front office people when I know they tried to page him twice (while I was standing there) and took no accountability. After this he gave me his cell phone number and told me to call him when I was in the room waiting. One of the medicines he put me on made me extremely mood which when I got into see him again he took me off it immediately and then called me (on his own after office hours) to follow up and see how I was doing with the new medicine. Also the diagnosis he gave me was completely wrong. Knowing I have a seizure disorder he put me on wellbutrin which causes seizures and had me out of work for months trying to get that out of my system and my seizures under control. He also has a bad reputation in… the medical community when I told my general practitioner and my counselor I was seeing Dr. Tatay they were not happy and referred me to another psychiatrist.
