Dr. Ralph Woodward Coonrad, MD

Back in 1972 Dr. Coonrad performed the first of two spinal fusions for Scoliosis on me with Harrington Rod Instrumentation. The second surgery happened two years later. Throughout the entirety of my care he was exceptional in every way. I can't think of a more compassionate doctor. Having all this surgery at the tender age of 10 and 12, was pretty scary. It was not an easy surgery and the post operative care was 3 months in bed with 1 year in a body cast each time. Dr. Coonrad always made me feel like I was his only patient. Fast forward about 30 years. I was having some problems with pain in my back. I saw several doctors locally here in Virginia but they didn't seem to have any answers for me. I finally reached out to Dr. Coonrad to get the answers I needed. He was just as gracious, caring, and helpful as he ever was. Thank you, Dr. Coonrad. Whenever I count my blessings I always count you among them.

Both Dr Coonrad and Dr Bugg reset my fractured 2nd and 3rd vertebra in 1961 when I was five years old. I laid in traction at Watts a few days and nights, then casted from my waist to my neck for six weeks. With the aid of a wire coat hanger, I relived the itching from the cast. I recall the day they freed me from the cast and told my mother, " I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole", meaning I was banned from all contact sports including backyard football and tree climbing. For my hardship, my parents gifted me with a Casper the Talking Ghost doll and an Ectch a Sketch. I'm 61 now and all has been well. No setbacks nor complications, just childhood memories.
