Dr. Rebecca E Gilfillan, MD

This doctor was very stubborn and unhelpful. I was inpatient at Illinois Masonic hospital and required further assistance because I was at risk of being home. Basically she lied saying that they couldn’t put me in a group home and kicked me out. I was having sleeping issues for the past 3 prior to the visit and she basically undervalued the severity of my conditions. She likes to talk at you but not with you. She’s very arrogant and shouldn’t be in charge with helping those in crisis..

She approved my son's release from inpatient psych even though he was experiencing active delusions; he tried to hurt himself. The clinicians she supervises at Clarity Clinic prescribe medications haphazardly putting their patients at risk. My son would not have these issues if he'd never been treated by her and the people she supervises at Clarity Clinic/Illinois Masonic. Beware.

I am a 51 year old female and since the age of 37 I have seen a few psychiatrists for anxiety and depression. I currently have a psychiatrist that I feel very comfortable with in which I can be 100% open and honest; but, Dr. Rebecca E Gilfillan is NOT one of them. She happened to be my psychiatrist when I was admitted to IL Masonic psychiatric unit. Approximately after four minutes speaking with her, I realized how an age gap of myself being 51 and she being much younger was going to be a serious issue as well as her demeanor. The disconnect of communication twenty years ago can easily be misconstrued today. While I was now an admitted patient, I became terrified that such power of either staying in the hospital or getting out was given to a doctor who is clueless with older patients and she does not talk with you but AT you. During my stay, I could not chose another doctor either. I was stuck. She seems to randomly pick medications then switch to another medication the next day… without any explanation. She never provided a write up of the medication, a nurse did when I asked. I have talked with other patients and she did the exact same thing as well. My concerns meant nothing to her. She had the power. I would not tell this woman the truth of my inner feelings because I knew she could care less of my input. I am so fortunate I have a regular psychiatrist I can trust or Dr. Gilfillan would have put me on the wrong medication, which she did that would cause me to feel ill and I would have to stay longer as I became more anxiety ridden. I was too frightened to tell her one bit about myself or the medication she chose due to her condescending tone. She was in charge of how long I stayed. I had to do what I needed to do to get released so I could see my usual psychiatrist. Also, she is misleading; I found out that I could have went home sooner. I take my illness very seriously and have read countless books on my illness and work diligently on trying to maintain balance. If you are older than 35, I caution you of seeing her for your illness. Research psychiatrists and inpatient policies diligently and I truly hope all people struggling with mental illness find proper guidance from a doctor you feel comfortable enough with to be open and honest. This is not a review of IL Masonic, many wonderful nurses and staff. Thank you to the nurse who told me what to do so that I could get out ASAP to see my primary psychiatrist. Also, many of the groups were helpful. Unfortunately Dr. Gilfillan caused more anxiety than I have ever felt in years. All I could do was put on my best face. I arrived home after six days and the script she provided I tossed away.
