Dr. Richard A Lewis, MD

Doctor tried to talk me out of my reason for being. Said my symptoms were either due to anxiety or another cause. Even though my symptoms were clearly representative of CIDP (I have all of them) he tried to tell it was all due to something else. The only reason I was there is that my GP gave me a preliminary diagnosis.

Dismissive. Disinterested. Disrespectful. Made a joke of my condition, stating, "Sometimes we don't find answers. Just accept it. If it makes you feel better, we can give it a name." He then made up a silly name and chuckled. At times he barked at me, like he was talking to a dog. I went through a lot of expense and effort to get to Cedars-Sinai, and after the long wait, Dr. Lewis' attitude and lack of concern was completely disheartening. Unfortunately, even when I saw other doctors at the facility who actually tried to find answers concerning my condition, things would eventually somehow circle back to Dr. Lewis, whose dismissiveness seemed to influence the whole process. I've been told he was a good doctor at one time, but maybe he's at an age now where he just doesn't care anymore. He really should retire. I advise others with neurological conditions to avoid him at any cost.

Every provider knew the medical history and listened and gave advice. They followed through on what they said they would do. Excellent service

I was hopeful about Dr. Lewis after our initial visit a year and a half ago. He seemed humble and suggested I head to Mayo Clinic for a work up. I remember him saying something like, "I'm very smart, but I think there's someone smarter than me you should see." So you can imagine my surprise when I followed up with him a few weeks ago and he challenged the Mayo Clinic MD's diagnosis. But that wasn't even my issue. It became clear to me that he had not reviewed my chart, our previous conversations, or test results prior to our visit. I understand that, in part, this Is due to CS only having access to reports and not Images or other more specific data. This is something that should be checked prior to patients driving hours to an appointment they waited over half a year for so that the visit can be more productive. He did not establish a shared mental model of the purpose and plan of the visit. He did not check in with me on my subjective experience, both physical and mental, since our… last visit, the latter of which I think should be treated more sensitively given the frustration that goes into rare and difficult to diagnose presentations. The most frustrating part of the visit though was how much he discounted my expertise, both as the individual living in the body he was treating but also as a fellowship-trained physical therapist. I was made to feel unknowledgeable and as if my emotional reaction to his handling of the visit was problematic.

I would suggest finding another doctor. He seems to anger easily when he’s unable to diagnose an illness. Awful body language and no eye contact. I wondered why I’d been referred to him.

After a long awaited appointment, Dr. Richard Lewis raised his voice at me after I told him I wanted to find the underlining issue behind my medical condition. He screamed “DONT”. He lectured me on the difference between cyclical symptoms and bad days. I am in search of answers and was hoping he could assist me. It is shocking that he is working with sick patients.

Despite documentation of decreased nerve conduction and autoimmune disease, Dr Richard Lewis was a condescending misogynist who told me my problem is “Women get bored and invent pain to get attention. You must have had a trauma in your life or maybe your husband just needs to pay more attention to you.”
