Dr. Robert Thomas Keenan, MD

Best communication, response, and thorough doctor ever!

Dr Keenan is a fantastic doctor. He immediately and correctly diagnosed the extremely rare disease I had lived with for over 40 years. I grew up in NY and was seen by rheumatologists, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists from before kindergarten through high school. During all three of my pregnancies I was tested for a battery of illnesses, with no diagnoses. Two of my three children suffer from the same rare disease and their pediatricians were unable to diagnose the illness. A year before seeing Dr. Keenan I went to see another rheumatologist at the urging of my children's pediatrician and our cornea specialist who reminded me that there had been great advances in medical discoveries. Again, a battery of tests later we were no closer to knowing what was affecting me and my children. Dr. Keenan ran no tests. Based on the information my cornea specialist provided him he was able to correctly diagnose our disease and effectively treat it!

Dr. Keenan is by far the best rheumatologist out there. I've never felt rushed, he listens extremely well. Outside of the box thinker. He also has spectacular bed side manner! This can be difficult for this field of doctors. He is always upfront about the risks with medications and he explains everything to you so that you understand. Many people travel outside of their own home state to find this kind of care and to specifically see Dr. Keenan. Not every specialist is up to par of the high standards patients expect being part of Duke. But he is top notch! I travel to see other specialists that can collaborate with each other about my care.

this is the dr. you are lucky to find. he is very compassionate, very knowledgable, and I am so glad I found him!!! I'm so sick with fibromyalgia/autoimmune problems. he is what a dr. should be. approachable and genuinely concerned.

I have been seeing Dr Keenan for 4 years. He is patient, kind and has great bedside manner. He always listens to me and responds if I send an email or call him with a problem. It is hard to get an appointment with him at times, but when you contact his office, they are great about working you in. I have great respect for him.

It is extremely difficult to get an appointment with Dr. Keenan. It is usually a 3-4 month waiting period. When an appointment is given, I have also gotten calls of where it is needed to be changed due to a conflict in his schedule. I have then waited another 1-2 months. When I have seen Dr. Keenan, he is friendly and seems to be knowledgeable. I have been seeing him for awhile now and I haven't received any relief with my medical issues. When I have a flare-up or need immediate attention, I can't get in touch with staff or him. It has taken up to a week for him to call me back. In the meantime, I had to seek other medical attention. If I need a medication refill, I have waited weeks to receive a call back. I usually have to repeatedly call to make sure that it is received. If Dr. Keenan is not available, he has 2 assistants. I don't recommend either one of them. One literally left me in tears due to the pain with no help offered. The other only listened, but didn't have… the medical background to offer any medical help. It was an absolute waste of time and money when I saw them!

I have seen Dr. Keenan at Duke Medical Center for over a year now. He and his professional staff have been wonderful. I have had to schedule tests, radiological studies and there have also been some complex situations that the staff and he have handled with ease. I believe that he is a wonderful example of how a physician should be. He is patient and caring. He is also accurate. I have a rare disease and he was able to control the disease and the symptoms with little delay. Which was wonderful to both my physical well being and my families mental health. I hope if you have a problem that requires a rheumatologist, you will consider the care and treatment he provides at Duke. Personally, I love this facility and the care I have had is stellar.
