Dr. Robert Brian Kohen, MD

Dr. Kohen, as I've noted in a previous review, is as skilled in the operating room as he is professional in his office. What I failed to mention, however, is that he is a genuinely nice man... a nice human being.

Dr. Kohen is an excellent doctor. I struggled with "frozen shoulder" for months; after one visit to his office, I felt great. He is not only very competent, but he manages to reassure you without minimizing your concerns.

Dr. Kohen came highly recommended, and from the moment I went to his office for shoulder consultation, I understood why. His staff was not only courteous and professional, but they were also friendly; a far cry from the curt behavior that seems to permeate so many medical staffs. And here's the thing... after 2 minutes with Doc Kohen, I understood why. The office energy comes directly from him. A nicer, more caring and patient doctor, I have not met. Then, of course, there is his talent with a scalpel; the man was literally born to do exactly what he does. In my case, I had reverse shoulder replacement surgery, and four days after the procedure I drove myself to the gym for a moderate cardio workout. I've not looked back from that day.

Last year i tore my left rotator cuff. Dr. Kohen did a wonderful job putting me "back together". I'm about 95% better....and im able to work out again. Thanks Doc S. Hines

Dr. Kohen is very nice and I deliberately give him grief to see his temperament. Great personality! His bookings are every 5-10 minutes. Having to wait over an hour for an appointment is an insult to a patient. It shows there is little regard for someone else's time.

I was referred to Dr .Kohen By another Dr who I see for pain management for my back. I was going to see Kohen for my Right shoulder. My first appointment I had no idea what to expect the waiting room was Packed with people, To my surprise I was called back with in 10-15 mins of arrival, placed in my room and chatted with the tech wasn't within 5 mins of her leaving my room Dr. Kohen walked in. WOW Wasn't expecting him to be so young! He was very pleasant, took his time with me, explained everything in detail so that when I left that office I had no unknowns, or any unanswered questions. After a month or so of PT, Dr. Kohen and I met and decided that my best option at that time would be Surgery to do some repairs. The day of the surgery I went to the Surgical center, and was treated by some amazing people, Dr. Kohen came in to see me before Surgery and again as he had many times in the past promised me he would make me feel better. I came out of surgery feeling no pain,… and no pain meds because for the first time EVER he had given me a nerve block, which I had never had after a surgery. Why Dr's don't do this more often is beside me. I did not have to take any pain meds.. I am 4.5 Months out from having surgery on my shoulder, you would never known I had surgery on my arm. The work Dr. Kohen did on my shoulder is nothing short of AMAZING.. When he promises you that he will make you feel better he Is not lying that is exactly what he did. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kohen for any sort of Shoulder/Knee surgery. Dr. Kohen is Young, Smart, Talented, and the most important part the BEST bed side manor I have seen from a Dr in a very long time.

It’s been 5-1/2 months since Dr. Kohen replaced my ACL and repaired a torn meniscus. I feel that I now am in a position to comment on the quality of Dr. Kohen’s work. WOW, does this young doctor have incredible talent! I can’t imagine a better experience or even suggesting that he do anything different. My personal goal was to skate with my granddaughter again and without the surgery that would be very unlikely. While in the pre-op room, Dr. Kohen assured me that he would have me skating with my granddaughter in 4 months and added he would have me playing contact sports in 6. I’ll pass with the contact sports since I’m 67 years old. Now for my comments in three areas: First, the pain that I expected NEVER came. After I left the out-patient clinic, I never needed any pain killers. I had my knee bandaged from ankle to thigh for 3 days and I did not take it off. During this 3-day period I really wondered if Dr. Kohen had replaced my ACL or did he decide not to. That’s how… non-existent the pain was from the surgery. The only pain I experienced was when I would knock one of my incisions with my knee brace. But that pain would quickly go away. Second, Dr. Kohen required that I rent some at-home rehab equipment for the first 3 weeks following surgery. I learned later that not many doctors required this equipment. For the benefits gained I’m surprised that it is not required by all doctors and the insurance companies. The equipment included a power knee flexing machine, a power ice wrap, and a power a calf massager. I was told that I should start using this equipment as soon as I arrived home and use it religiously. The flexing machine I was to use 2-hours at a time and 3 times daily. The ice wrap I used whenever I wasn’t moving around and while I slept. I used the calf massager pretty much all the time including when I was flexing my knee and while I slept. I also had some simple exercises to do. Third, I took Dr. Kohen’s recommendation regarding the physical therapy rehab facility, because as he said, “They know exactly what I want.” I started PT exactly 3 weeks after my surgery. Upon my initial evaluation the therapist was stunned. She could hardly believe the flexibility I had in my knee (121 degrees) and I could straighten my leg without any difficulty or pain. Then she asked who was my doctor. I said Dr. Kohen and she responded with an “Oh” and a smiled (as if to indicate 'that explains it'). About the second week of rehab I saw a young lady who was flying through a rope ladder exercise that was used for agility building. Her feet were moving so fast it was like a blur. I asked about her and they said Dr. Kohen had replaced her ACL about 4 months earlier. Wow, what a motivation, and to think I had the same doctor! Throughout my rehab they were telling me I was way ahead of curve. At my 30 day evaluation I was up to 130 degrees flexibility (my non-injured leg was at 132 degrees). I had the flexibility pretty fast. The strength and agility took some time to rebuild. After 6 weeks of rehab I was feeling so good that I secretly cranked up all of my exercises. But this actually resulted in me pulling my non-ACL muscles and giving myself a 2 week setback. But as one therapist said, “You’re still way ahead of the curve.” After about 3 months of rehab they wanted ME to try the rope ladder! To my surprise I had no problem with the agility and I was going pretty fast too. As I was approaching the 4 month after surgery mark all of the rehab people were confident that I would have no problem skating with my granddaughter. Dr. Kohen was more cautious. He wanted me to not do any fancy stuff and no hockey. We had a great time and I had no problems at all. I accomplished my goal. PT concluded shortly thereafter. At today’s appointment, exactly 5-1/2 months following surgery, Dr. Kohen gave me the green light to do whatever I wanted and no further appointments necessary! Summary: In my opinion, Dr. Kohen is blessed with an incredible talent as a surgeon. I give Dr. Kohen an extremely high recommendation for ACL replacement and torn meniscus repair surgery.

Dr. Kohen did Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff surgery on me in 9/13. I had 4 complete tears. He diagnosed me & had me back for an ultrasound in a few days. I had surgery a week later at an out patient surgical facility where I received excellent care. My surgery was about an hour, I went home with a pain pump. I had no significant pain ever. Wore a sling for a month. Then had rehab for 6 months. I recovered 100% mobility in my shoulder. I'd highly recommend Dr. Kohen!

This doctor really listened and heard. Me. Frank and honest. Good sense of humor and ability toco next with patients .
