Dr. Robert Stewart Powell

My friend had a 3rd knee op by dr. Powell, which turned out fabulously, however, she slipped in the bath tub within the first week. Dr Powell spent lots of time with her, talking and explaining what was going on with her knee and what she could or couldn’t do. She fell again and this time He met her in the er and scheduled an emergency surgery while cautioning her she had limited bone left to work with. Then he put a cast on for 60 days to keep the knee stable. She went to a nursing home. The nurses and aides did not did not take good care of her knee. It was often bent, thrown around and twisted. His written directions weren’t followed. Unfortunately, This caused the knee to be permanently damaged. However, if I ever needed a knee op, I would definitely go to him. He is kind and caring and busy.

Sorry to wake this guy up with my 7 am appt....he had sleep crust in his eyes, and dried spit on the corner of his mouth, eyes bloodshot...half awake. I know three things after me having to ask all the questions. I have "plenty of cartilage" He is 52 (I'm 57)and "every morning he wakes up, his body hurts somewhere"...unquote And he has "patients that take a bottle of Ibuprofen a week to manage their pain"..."do you take anything to manage yours?"...One of the few things he did ask... No prodding , poking, stretching, moving ...nothing. The symptoms were...trouble walking, can't sleep, constant pain in left hip, restricted movement...going on 8 months. After dancing with Kaiser and reluctantly getting an MRA from my primary care doc...YES..there is a severely torn Labrum. Kaiser in general is questionable with the detail of actual good health care. I keep running into people like Dr Powell who act like they should be fixing transmissions , and not people.

I had right hip replacement in May 2015 nothing but pain, my leg length is linger on the right by slmist 2 inches. I now had problems in turning the opposite direction when walking, in constant pain in the groin area with every step I'm being pounder in the groin like someone taking their fist into it, it hurts to touch my leg on the side and pain from above my knee going up my leg. My leg now gives out on me to where I have no strength in my hip replacement leg. After a year I finally got a second opinion thru Kaiser because after all his second guesses he said he can't do anything to help me. He lied to me and said he gave me an injection in my bursa said it grew back. Most painful injection ever. I Left His Office in tears went home took a pucture where he gave me the injection. Not the bursa I've had injectons to know where the bursa is. He gave me an injection into the band near the inscession. I confronted him about this and he said he gave me an injection into the band. What a… liar and then to tell me I really didn't need surgery anyways my hip was not that bad to begin with. This second Kaiser surgeon did the second opinion measured my results of the x rays and MRI then said Powell must have had a good reason for implanting the parts for someone 6 foot tall when I'm only 5'1" tall. I now have different insurance outside of Kaiser and waiting for MRI resultas to come in. This surgeon thinks I need the femur shortened. I am so upset. Do not go to Dr. Powell. Most of my visits to his office he did not come into the room to see me. I asked for a shoe lift because my left leg was shorter he probably thought he was being funny the other guy came in and said Dr. Told me to give you this a shoe lift so big and wise for a man's shoe will not fit in a size 5 shoe. What a joke. After my surgery I went back and spent 5 more days in the hospital. Not once since my surgery or extended hospital stay did Dr. Powell visit my bedside...not once. Do I recommend Dr. Powell. HE'LL NO.

Not a great communicator. In my opinion he is very unsure of himself which he masks with his abrupt nature. In my opinion he is probably adverse to change, or patient participation in medical decisions. He is disinterested in his patients, and in my opinion would make poor medical decision if faced with medical anomalies, or out of the routine issues that may arise during surgery in my opinion. He would be well suited to medical research with no patient contact in my opinion.

I saw Dr.Powell for an evaluation of my left knee that I had a previous knee scope on 7 years prior. He ordered a new MRI and called me a week after I had the MRI to give me my results. He will not make a office visit to go over results, which was fine with me but others might not like that. I can say he did spend time with me and I did not feel he was rushed. I did get the MRI within 5 days of his visit. But where the ball stopped is when it came to make an appointment for Surgery, a knee scope only takes 30-45 mins and I could not get a surgery appt for 4- 5 months. My injury was a work comp injury so I was lucky I could go back to the Dr. that did the orginal surgery who is a private pratice Doctor and have him do my surgery since I had kept future medical open on my claim. Kasier did a great job in getting me my appointments but if you need surgery prepare to wait unless it is a broken bone that needs mending. I too saw the patient that was upset, but can see his side of things.… Its a tough system to fix but if you get yourself educated it can be good health care. Hope this helps!

I am a young active female who has been suffering from constant hip pain for 2 years. I knew the moment I injured my leg, however figured it would heal over time....it has not. I was diagnosised with a tear of the right superior anterior labrel. My husband and I met with Dr Powell, same day I called the office for an appointment, and he took ampel time with us to explain and answer any of my questions. He was not a teddy bear in the caring department, but was very honest, too the point, and put it black and white! I like that in a doctor. I still left with an indiffernt feeling....I can't put my finger on it. My husband has a good, confident feeling from him, and I trust my husbands judgement. I did however forgot some of the most important questions.His patient success rate, how many surgeries he has completed,how long he has been in practice...etc. I can't seem to find a history on him tho, only the one nasty rating left and I am not sure the person was upset because he didn't read… some research that she wanted him too, or because he was not a good surgeon. Not sure....But i would appreciate some in site. And I thank you in advance,
