He performed general dentistry for four years including a one year dental residency (AEGD). Dr. Sheperd completed his oral surgery residency at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark (UMDNJ). He then completed four more years in the Air Force practicing oral surgery and instructing general dental residents. Dr. Sheperd entered into private practice in 2008.
