Dr. Robert Paul Spears, MD

I have been a patient of Dr Spears for many many years and he is an awesome Dr. I saw him today and he was very polite and helpful. He has always been an excellent Dr as far as I am concerned. His staff is great and I've never had any problems with them I even got my hearing aids there.

This past year Dr. Spears demeanor has gone down significantly. He’s not the peppy doctor he was, say 2 years ago. He’s diagnosis are riddled with “I don’t know”, and “free to seek 2nd opinion”. Before he worked with you, listened, and offered solutions/diagnosis. Perhaps after 8 years, he just doesn’t know how to tell me he’s stumped. I’ve seen 6 other ENT’s or allergist, but always return to Spears because I felt he cared and did want to help me with my chronic illness. But from my last visit to now, things are different. He explained he took a leave from hospital duties, and as of my last visit (6 months ago) he wasn’t reinstated again. I see him again today, really like Dr. Spears, and I hope he’s back again to his old self or is it time to cut the cord and start looking for another ENT, but definitely not with practice. First, Dr. D., with these ENT specialists, was the disaster that brought me to Dr. Spears by my Primary Care doctor. No complaint about staff or time waiting (I’ve… learned to bring a book), but as for appointments, don’t expect to be seen for a non emergency illness in less than two or three weeks. Scheduling clerk for test or procedures is really bad to work with, no people skills. In office, after an appointment, scheduling is okay, of course if they follow doctors orders. Hoping things change for the best today, as I said, Dr. Spears is a good honest man. He just needs to return to his old happy ways. He did know his patients well and showed interest. Time will tell, and after so many years of being treated by him, I will return and give him the stars he did deserved before.

I hate to say anything negative honestly as Dr. Spiers has been ok to me but overall the negative would be he really does talk a lot and I felt like he didn't always listen or really hear what I was saying. I had to interrupt him to make sure I got everything in and didn't forget what I wanted to bring up during my visit. He is really friendly and nice and a people person and on the one hand it can put you at ease but then if you're concerned for your health sometimes you just need the doctor to listen and take a whole body approach. Another negative is the long wait. One time I was there for I think an hour and the receptionist said the doctor wouldn't get there for another hour or two. It was hard because I had tried to schedule this when I could take a little time from work and I needed to get back so I thought I'd blocked more than enough time but with that really long delay it was hard. Previous visits took a long time to be seen, too. Not sure why but this office/doctor is one of… the longest waits out of all my doctors. I think he's ok if you're ok with waiting but I think the talking thing is something he needs to take seriously because patients need to know you're listening and care about them.

Yes, if you are planning to see Dr. Spears expect to wait for a couple of hours. Even though this may not be the most ideal experience, I wouldn't trade Dr. Spears as my ENT doctor for anything! He talks very fast and sometimes slips in a curse word here and there but he is extremely knowledgeable and is really passionate about what he does. He is definitely a funny character. He is a "normal" (according to him) LSU fan and always wears his purple and gold tennis shoes. He doesn't ever make me feel inferior as a patient and there is no "I'm the Doctor, hear me roar!" type stuff. He is a very real person. What you see is what you get. I really appreciate that from him. The ENT clinic staff is not all that great but Dr. Spears is the only reason why I am a returning patient.

The whole staff is a joke! First of all every time we have been we have waited 2 or more hours after our appointment time to see the doctor, and there was only one other person in the waiting room before us. After 2+ hours of waiting then we see his nurse or medical assistant and he tries to be funny but you can't even understand a word he is saying because he talks a million miles an hour. After you deal with this clown then they take you to another room where you yet again wait for another hour. Once we did see Dr. Spears he kept asking questions that we already answered and said oh wait I guess I should read your paper work first huh? dah, ya think? Then he asked us to get all of our previous allergy and sleep study results for him and that he would order a cat scan, two weeks later and we had heard nothing so I called their office and the nurse was like oh oops I forgot to schedule it!!!! well then we had the cat scan done, retrieved all of our test results and proceeded to call… the office again and schedule the follow up appt. with Dr. Spears. About a week and a 1/2 after the appt had already been scheduled they called us and said they were calling to schedule a follow up and that they needed my husbands signature so that they could retrieve the test results ....duh stupid we already got them and scheduled the follow up, we are scheduled to be there in 2 days...response-oh. well today is follow up day, appt was at 2:30 guess what it is 4:02 still have not seen this idiot!!!!!! They are unprofessional and not respectful of your time so I would not recommend Dr. Spears or ENT of San Antonio to anyone. They do not even deserve one star but I had to put a rating to write this review, their rating is actually a -4 stars

I felt that Dr. Spears did not listen and question enough. He jumped to wanting to order tests that were not for my problem.
