Dr. Smith earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Stanford, California, and his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He completed a year of surgery at Tulane University and a neurosurgical residency at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He also completed fellowships at the University of Zurich and the National Hospital in Queen Square, London. Dr. Smith was in full-time academic medicine and in private practice before joining Ochsner in 2001. He is an active medical educator and holds a clinical associate professorship at LSU School of Medicine. Dr. Smith is also active in a variety of professional memberships and medical organizations. He has held positions such as President of the Louisiana Neurosurgical Society (1995-1996) and President-Elect of the Orleans Parish Medical Society (2002-2003). Dr. Smith specializes in surgery of the brain and spine.

IN 2009, MY HUSBAND HAD A MIDDLE CEREBRAL ARTERY STROKE AT THE AGE OF 43. HE CODED SEVERAL TIMES IN SLIDELL AS HIS BRAIN BEGAN TO SWELL. HE WAS RUSHED TO BIG OCHSNER WHERE DR. SMITH TOOK OVER AT 1:30 AM. HE REMOVED A PORTION OF HIS SCULL AND STORED IT IN HIS ABDOMEN. AFTER THE SWELLING WENT DOWN, HE THEN REPLACED THE SKULL. GUY BEGAN THE LONG JOURNEY OF RECOVERY (AND STILL IS). IF IT WERE NOT FOR DR. SMITH, HE WOULD NOT BE ALIVE TODAY! HE IS ABLE TO ENJOY HIS BOYS GROWING UP!! ONE RECENTLY JOINED THE AIR FORCE. THE YOUNGEST WILL GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL THIS COMING YEAR. HE IS SO PROUD OF HIS BOYS, AND THEY ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THEIR FATHER!! THANK YOU DR. SMITH, FOR BEING THE WONDERFUL, SKILLED, KIND AND THOROUGH SURGEON THAT YOU ARE. WE LOVE YOU!!

Doctor smith placed a shunt from the center of my brain and routed it down to my abdomen. The shunt was to relieve the pressure on my brain. Doctor Smith is a great doctor. If this had not been done I would not be here today. If I hadn't moved out of town, I would still be under his care. He is very knowledgeable in his field of neurosurgery. Thank you, doctor Smith, I wish I would still be under your care.

I truly know that I had the best Neurosurgeon there is when I had Dr. Smith. I was referred by a retired Neurosurgeon to Dr. Smith for removal of a meningioma. He was so very thorough in his examination and talking with me about my situation. He agreed with my referral to have the tumor removed. He took such care as to remove very little of my hair and within 6 weeks of my surgery you could not tell that I had a 5 inch incision across the top of my head. His staff is great. The wait time is a little long but he is worth the wait to have the peace of mind that you are getting the best.

DR. SMITH TOOK THE TIME TO EXPLAIN MY MRI AND ABOUT THE MEDICATIONS HE WA PRESCRIBING FOR MY NUMBNESS IN MY FACE. I FELT LIKE HE WAS A VERY SINCERE DOCTOR WHO TOOK THE TIME TO LISTEN TOO. I TRULY LEFT HIS OFFICE FEELING MORE KNOWEGABLE ABOUT THIS CONDITION. HE EVEN SENT OUT A LETTER TO MY INTERNIST AND MYSELF. I THOUGHT HE WAS GREAT.
