Does not listen to patient - seems to want to hear himself talk. Also difficult to reach when having problems.

He truly is the best doctor I have ever had to see. He was caring and made sure I understood what was happening. I just wish I could see him for everything now that he has fixed my back!

I was referred to Dr. Mayer for a second opinion for a laminectomy and removal of a T4-T5 spinal tumor that was severely compressing against and adhering to my spinal cord. Based on his care, concern, excellent credentials, thorough explanation of my condition as a medical emergency and need for immediate surgery during the initial consult, Dr. Mayer instantly earned my trust and respect, and I felt confident in switching my care to him. He carefully listened to my concerns, thoroughly explained my MRI results, including the risks/benefits of surgery, and clearly answered all of my questions. Knowing that he trained at MD Anderson and alongside the top neurosurgeons in the US at UCSF was very reassuring. He is in practice with other excellent, very highly respected, experienced, highly rated neurosurgeons, which also speaks volumes. My surgical outcome and recovery so far have been nothing short of a miracle! My pre-op pain is gone; I have regained my range of motion and strength… in my left leg; and the numbness in my right leg and my other symptoms are gone! He followed up with me multiple times following surgery, including calling my home at night to answer my questions after his long day of surgeries. His staff is polite, timely, very professional, and friendly. My entire family and I are so incredibly grateful to Dr. Mayer for my better-than-expected results and recovery! I highly recommend him without reservation to anyone who needs neurosurgery.

If I could give Dr. Mayer more than 5 stars, I would! I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs a neurosurgeon! He listened to my mom, treated her with a sense of urgency, explained everything well, and answered all of our questions. He thoroughly reviewed her case and obtained further diagnostic imaging for more information prior to surgery. He explained all risks/benefits of surgery and explained all of his well thought out contingency plans based on what he could possibly find during surgery. The fact that he spent so much time thoroughly reviewing and analyzing my mom’s case to prepare for every worst case scenario helped my entire family know that she was in great hands. During surgery, he was able to remove the entire tumor while preserving all motor and sensory function, which is quite a feat, as her tumor had started to adhere to the spinal cord. The day after surgery, my mother’s pain was minimal, and she regained significant range of motion and strength. She was able… to ambulate short distances with hand held assist and/or a rolling walker. A couple days after surgery, she began to regain sensation. Not only is Dr. Mayer a skilled neurosurgeon with excellent outcomes, he is an excellent medical professional. He shows sincere care and compassion for his patients, has excellent bedside manner, and provides top notch personalized care. He personally called my mom at home after hours on a Friday night because he had been in surgery all day but saw he had a message from her. The fact that he has been so attentive to her post-op has been very reassuring. Dr. Mayer truly exceeded all of our expectations, and that is coming from another healthcare professional, who has high expectations for my mother’s care. I could not recommend him highly enough.

Dr. Mayer is highly recommended! He took care of me after a head injury and having brain surgery is very scary, but Dr. Mayer was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to listen to all of my concerns and fully discusses my options. He made me feel so taken care of and safe under his care. I knew I was in good hands.
