Dr. Ryon Michael Hennessy, MD

I saw him for hip pain that I'd been experiencing. I'd had an MRI before seeing him and thought I was there to discuss the results. When he walked in, instead of telling me what was going on with my hip he immediately started to fat shame me about losing weight. He talked about my layers of fat, all the fat in my behind, and my overhanging belly. I had to finally stop him to ask about my hip. He brought me out to the staff area and weighed me, then brought me to the staff desk with 5-6 staff and announced my weight 4 or 5 times. He finally asked one of them to input it and had her announce twice what my BMI was. Then he took me back to the office and continued to go on and on about my need to lose weight. The fat shaming didn't work because I know I need to lose weight which is why I need to get my hip fixed. He is one of the worst medical professionals that I've ever met. Seeing him was a waste of my time and money.

WORST experience of my life! Felt like he’s not wasting time or money on medicare patients. Pain was off the charts. I should’ve been given option of sedation for procedure.

To Dr. Hennessy regarding your recommendation and praise for Dr. Tipirneni - In all my 50+ years of experiences with various doctors in the Chicagoland area, Dr. Naveen Tipirneni is by far the most unprofessional and incompetent doctor in his field. He is NOT qualified to administer pain management for back/spine problems. He left me helpless and unemployed due to NOT returning phone calls. My pending MRI was never addressed. My messages to him were ignored and he took four days off without bothering to reply to me before his time off. My calls to his office were all “canned” responses that typically were a waste of my time. I had no other choice but to seek medical treatment with another doctor. I do not understand how Dr. Ryon Hennessy of Orthopedic Surgery in Elmhurst, Illinois would allow such an incompetent doctor treat his patients. I am filing a complaint with the Illinois Medical Board in hopes that others do not go through the horrendous negligence I experienced regarding my… medical condition.

Dr Hennessy did a total knee replacement for my mom. I am a physician and informed him prior to surgery of my mother’s codeine allergy, but he and the anesthesiologist decided to move forward with their plan for duramorph anyhow. Only later did we learn the use of duramorph is an antiquated practice and for patients with codeine allergy is essentially an absolute contraindication. Its use resulted in an agonizing allergic reaction requiring IV Benadryl, rendering my mom sedated and miserable. Dr. Hennessy insisted on using aspirin for anticoagulation despite my asking for an alternate agent prior to surgery, due to my mother’s history of NSAID induced peptic ulcer. He used it nonetheless, and prescribed even more NSAIDs for pain control. Luckily we were able to stop the NSAIDs for pain before they were given, and we insisted on higher doses of PPI to protect against the aspirin, without which she surely would have developed another peptic ulcer. Unfortunately, she developed a blood… clot regardless, and will now require therapeutic anticoagulation for 3 months. After thorough review of the orthopedics literature, best practices, and standards of care, we realized just how many near-misses and oversights occurred under his management. Based on the above, I would not recommend Dr. Hennessy to anyone planning an invasive orthopedic procedure.

He knew exactly what he was doing and was very conversational throughout the process!

Dr. Ryon Hennessy was rude and rush me throughout my visit! He kept looking at his phone and wouldn't look at me directly when I was asking him questions regarding my issue. He made be feel like he didn't care at all. The best thing you can do is NOT go to this Dr., there is way too many Dr.'s out there for you to be wasting your time with Dr. Ryon!

A little history, I've been dealing with spondyolisthesis grade 1 and stenosis for many years. I work as a hairdresser for over 25 years and it had gotten to a point where standing for long hours was excruciating . I've spoken to many doctors and done so much research looking for solutions -- with all being the same result -- spinal fusion. I am not a fan of spinal fusion because it locks the spinal in place and doesn't allow for movement -- which the spine is designed to move. So in searching for alternatives to fusion I came across a device called Coflex. Coflex is a C shaped device that allows the spine to move and bend but also helps stabilize the spine. The company's website shows doctors who've trained using this technique. I made an appointment with 3 of them. The first, doctor, Harel Deutsch at Rush says he's done 20 such surgeries (the device is new), but more than that, I got an uncomfortable feeling that he was all too excited to "practice" the procedure on me. When… I asked about Coflex, he said "do you want to do Coflex?" How do I know?!!! I'm there for his professional recommendation -ugh! Next doctor, Dr Daniel Laich, Swedish Convenant, send me a letter in the mail stating they'd have to cancel the appointment - could I reschedule? Ugh! Finally, Dr. Hennessy -- I fill out standard paperwork and the nurse calls me in - as I am being placed in the exam room, a doctor? comes to the door and says "she has spondy, take her to get forward/backward x-rays" and leaves. Wow! was that Dr. Hennessey I ask the nurse - yep that was him. So if bedside manner is what you're looking for - keep looking. BUT if you want a doctor who will give it to you straight, he's your man. He had me look at my x-rays and explained condition and when I suggested Coflex, he told me I was not a good candidate for it and explained why. I was a better candidate for the dreaded spinal fusion!!! He actually has a sense of humor and explained he'd rather do Coflex cause it's a shorter operation and he's getting old - standing on his feet for long hours! Which I found funny and human. I think Dr. Hennessy has received bad reviews because he's a bit abrupt and not the "hold your hand" type. I'm still not sure if I want to do surgery, but I wanted to write a fair review of my experience with Dr. Hennessey - hope it helps.

I think he did a very good job with my knee surgery. However he has terrible "bed side manner". He's definitely not someone who likes questions or explaining things to you. In fact I found he seems very annoyed taking time with me.

I just wanted to thank this site more than anything and especially all the reviews. I was literally in the process of making an appointment for my mother with this guy! Looks like I dodged a bullet. My mother is having a hard time coping with needing a Total Knee Replacements. Having a rude uncaring doctor like this guy would be devastating.

My mother was in his office today. She, my sister and niece waited over two hours before being taken to a room and then still had to wait. When he came in to see my mom he seemed annoyed that she was there even though it was his associate who had seen us. He looked at her Mri and told she COULD have surgery but she was 91,. When she was disappointed with his diagnosis he said "You're 91 what do you expect?" He was downright rude. After he said that he started talking to my sister, as if my mom wasn't just talking to him. "Does she still drive." We will never go back to this doctor.
