Dr. Sally Lewiecki Mayo, PhD

We went for family therapy regarding relationship issues with our teenager. The issues were certainly not insurmountable. Our teenager never had an issue with drugs and never got into serious trouble. We just needed assistance on better communication, getting our teen to listen and learning how to listen as well, and finding ways to get them out of their room and be more apart of the family. We went through quite a bit getting this appointment and driving out of town to see her. After one 45-minute session, she told us our situation was too complex for her, and to find somebody else. I don't understand. We went in there very open-minded and fully ready to try anything she suggested. She made us feel like the worst family in the world. I mean, if our situation was too complex for a Ph.D, something must be terribly wrong with us. I already felt terrible to begin with and she just made me feel so much worse. But honestly, I don't think we told her anything that bad. Our teenager was… waiting in the waiting room the whole time and never even spoke to dr. Mayo. This was quite a while ago and over time, I've come to realize that the issue was not with us but with this doctor. I cannot recommend.

In meeting this individual I was instantly snapped at for her having misplaced my paperwork after handing it to her. The one thing she was most concerned about was that I did not have a co-pay and was very bothered by this. She was cold and rigid, and had a quick snarky retort for anything I shared with her. I only provided an answer to whatever questions she asked. She looked me up and down multiple times with disgust as we spoke. She even so much as touched upon a rather sensitive subject with mockery as if I were a joke for having felt a given way or been through the experiences and trauma that I have. She belittled and dismissed the experience. Then proceeded to elaborate about a personal surgery she is going to be having, and how she will be out of the practice for quite some time. Informing me she did not think we were a good fit and she wasn't going to be taking on new clients anyway. Keep in mind this is after I waited two months to meet with her. After her, telling me she now… had some time available in her schedule to add me to her clientele. To be honest she seemed rather bitter about the surgery, though what do I know, I'm supposed to be the client!? I left her office in utter disgust. In the worst mood and very triggered after having arrived optimistic. I would ask yourself why are you sitting in her office, and have you really grown from where you started, or better - are you being influenced to remain in place convenient for her to continue collecting money from you since that was clearly her biggest concern. Be on gaurd. I find it atrocious that there is someone in this field of work who is subjectively selecting clients based off how much money she can pocket and how easy it will be for her have security in their seeing them - isn't it the client who is supposed to feel secure? But when you struggle with mental health challenges how can you really know who to trust? This field of work is not a joke and NO ONE should ever be dismissed or judged. If you cannot handle the role then maybe you should pick a different seat and be someone who takes advice not gives it.
