Valeria Martinez Tenreiro, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC

Valeria/Val is a board-certified (bilingual) psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Her path into nursing and behavioral health was rather unusual. When she was a worker’s compensation and disability paralegal, she witnessed the difficulties that clients suffering from mental illnesses faced both in seeking and receiving mental health services, and doing something to help fulfill unmet needs became her aspiration. Her passion for mental health continued to grow while working as an oncology bedside nurse where she provided care not just for her patient’s physical symptoms but also by helping them and their families cope with the anxiety, helplessness, and confusion that cancer brings.Valeria has over 8 years of nursing experience working in oncology and medical-surgical units at the University of Colorado Hospital. She obtained her MSN from the University of Colorado Denver in 2023. Her behavioral health training and experience include community settings as well as hospital-based …settings. She enjoys working with older teens as well as adults of all ages with a wide array of diagnoses including grief, life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, bipolar, and psychotic disorders. When offering treatment plans, she values her patients’ unique experience, world view, autonomy and self-determination and involves them in all aspects of the decision-making process.Outside of work, Valeria is an advocate for the Hispanic community, currently serving as the President of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses in Denver. She cherishes her time with her husband and grown children and loves to travel and learn about other cultures.Valeria sees teens and adults from ages 15+. We will explore problems with memory, thought processes and behaviors.Screening tools can be used to help establish a diagnosis along with input from family and friends who know you well. The goal is to understand how thinking, behavior and emotions are impacting your ability to work, function in your community and within your family or social circle. Medication Management:While medication management is not always necessary to manage mental health, it is a tool available. As licensed providers we use a conservative approach, using the least amount of medication necessary. Exploring how exercise, nutrition, and other aspects of wellness are important when considering the use of psychotropic medications which we include in our ongoing evaluation. Psychotherapy:Our providers use a combination of techniques, often in conjunction with medication management, to explore themes impacting individuals. We incorporate concepts of mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, and trauma informed theory into our practice. We will predominantly offer individual therapy in conjunction with medication management, though may offer individual therapy alone on a case-by-case basis. Group therapy will be offered periodically for PTSD, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Emotional Freedom Therapy.
