Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sharma, MD

His name is well known throughout Austin at the guy to go to when there's a problem. I've met several Hand physical therapists who say the same thing, unsolicited. Truly a gem amongst physicians out there.

In late 2013, I had a serious injury to my wrist and forearm from a chain saw accident. I was taken to Brackenridge ER by ambulance. Since I had eaten before the accident, they had to delay surgery until about 9P. Dr. Sharma worked on me until 11P repairing all the severed muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Even though he must have been exhausted, he still found time to call my wife at 11P and comfort her with a detailed report. Despite the extent of the trauma, the surgery, aided by follow up physical therapy, was a success. Movement, blood supply, and sensation were restored. Over the next two years, I had follow visits with Dr. Sharma. He was always courteous, professional, and helpful in giving advice to improve strength and flexibility to the affected hand. The affected hand/forearm had been immobilized in a cast for quite a while, and I was reluctant to put any strain on it. This resulted in muscle atrophy and formation of scar tissue on the back of the hand, and… around the knuckles over time. This caused a weakened grip strength, and reduced dexterity in the affected hand. Dr. Sharma recommended further surgery to open the knuckle joint capsules and improve the movement of the tendons, as well as remove scar tissue. Sadly, I resisted his very good advice for over a year. It reached a critical point where the operation was increasingly less likely to be successful if I delayed any longer. I had the follow up surgery in January 2016. I am happy to report that with the surgery, and more physical therapy, significant improvements have been made. Even Dr. Sharma said he had never seen a patient that waited as long as I did still get such a significant improvement in strength and flexibility of the hand. I did work hard, but I give most of the credit to Dr. Sharma. I now joke with him that he should have just persuaded me sooner.

Dr. Sharma is a professional and an excellent surgeon. So when it comes to the important part of taking care of any medical procedure, he is the best and I can't think of anyone else more qualified (including his nurse Sara). My real issues are with his office staff; they are rude, self absorbed, snobby ladies who have no customer service skills. If it wasn't for Dr. Sharma being who he is, and with the reputation he has, I would have walked, even ran away from his practice because of his office staff. He needs to make changes to improve the patient experience. Also, it would have been nice for either him or his nurse to reach out to me the day after the surgery to check on how I was doing rather than wait till the 2-week follow up appointment. It is for this reason that I cannot give his practice a 5-star overall rating; which is a shame.

Dr. Sharma is one of the best doctors I've ever seen. He truly cares about the well-being of his patients. Not only are his bedside manners excellent, his skills as surgeon are exemplary. I had a bone growth in the middle of my forehead and he did an amazing job of taking care of it, making sure the incision was on the hairline; but I didn't even have to get any hair shaved off. The bruising was minimal and I was up and about in two days. The stitching was also artistically done (very important, considering this wasn't really a cosmetic procedure). I absolutely love my new forehead! Nobody even notices the stitches. Most importantly, he strikes me as a good human being, not just good doctor. I would highly recommend him.

Dr. Sharma saved my fingers after a tragic saw accident. There is still a long road ahead but I have faith that he will see me thru it all.
