Dr. Scott Gibson, DO

I suffered a grade 3-4 AC Joint separation in 2019 during a cycling crash when I was a full-time athlete. This review has to do with the results of my surgery. Dr. Gibson was always kind and attentive and I appreciate that. I had AC Joint reconstructive surgery with Dr. Gibson in September of 2020 after taking a conservative approach with my AC Joint injury. I still had instability and discomfort and did a ton of research and along with Dr. Gibson we decided surgery would be the be route forward. I was a professional athlete at the time of my crash and this injury was debilitating. The next 2 years to follow have been horrible. At first I was told the pain after the surgery was due to my bone healing after Dr. Gibson drilled a hole in my coracoid and performed a double endo button fixation along with a clavicle resection. For the past two years my pain, range of motion, and functionality has been far worse than before surgery. I saw Dr. Gibson for 3-4 follow up visits in 2020-2021 and… he assured me things were looking good based on the imaging. I went to two other ortho surgeons (one in Flagstaff and one in California) and after they ordered an MRI/CT scan (Dr. Gibson only did X-Rays) they both confirmed that I had a fracture in my coracoid due to the surgery (extremely painful any time you move your arm) and also a large amount of scar tissue built up on the top of my clavicle due to the surgery (which has been causing nerve issues down my arm, trap, and neck). I understand surgery is a risky game, however at my age and with my background it is imperative you make sure you get the best of the best operating on you. This fracture in my coracoid has severely affected my life in the most negative ways and it wasn't the case before surgery. Any quick movements with my dominant arm cause severe pain that I've been living with for 2 years. My entire right arm is now frequently numb and it has affected my bio-mechanics in so many ways. I can't sleep on my right side at all. I will now have to get two more surgeries, one to repair my fractured coracoid (this is a risky surgery) as it cannot repair on its own due to the muscles and tendons that are attached to it and pull at it and another surgery to correct the AC Joint fixation so that it isn't pushing against my brachial plexus or radial nerves that is causing a ton of functionality issues in my dominant right arm/trap/shoulder. Overall I am severely disappointed that I paid a 4.5k insurance deductible for surgery and did 6-8months of dedicated PT and recovery only to have to do this all over again. This should have been done right the first time or I should have been referred out to a surgeon that feels confident operating on high level athletes. I'm about to be 34 years old and have many physical goals ahead of me, but I can barely function most days based on how much pain I'm in. My pain is far worse after surgery than it was before surgery. I am not happy at all with how my life and well-being have been so negatively impacted by having this surgery at Northern Arizona Healthcare. I used to work for this company and I have to say that the quality of care is just sub-par for the area. I will now be getting my surgeries done in California and have to go through the unnecessary stress of getting insurance there and living there for 6 months just to get cut open again and go through this entire healing process again. This is your life and your happiness in question here. Do your research about the procedure you are getting and regardless of what state a surgeon lives in, do everything you can to see the best of the best in the field that does your specific operation. I will now be working with MLB/UFC surgeons to try to get me back to some resemblance of where I was before my crash. Hopefully so that I don't have to live in pain for the rest of my life.

Certainly Recommend Dr Scott Gibson. He took time to answer my questions, great personality and the carpal tunnel surgery went perfect. Not all will experience immediate relief due to each persons conditions are different. Dr Scott and team got me scheduled very quickly and I was fortunate to have immediate relief. His staff is also very professional and friendly.

Dr. Gibson is a very competent ortho specialist that's very easy to deal with. He explains his diagnosis clearly, presents options with pros and cons, and has a very easy manner. I would use him as my ortho specialist again and recommend him to others.
