Dr. Scott H Jones, DO

He is very astute. I trust him completely. His manner is gentle and direct. He is not just a straight "here's a pill" doctor - he cares about his patients and listens well.

As a quadruple-boarded psychiatrist in the K.C. metro area, I felt compelled to respond to the commentary by the wife of the patient who had trouble while taking Brintellix, Pristiq, and Wellbutrin at the same time. First, I should preface my comments by stating that I am not just trying to defend Dr. Jones because we are together in the fraternity of doctors, or whatever. I am merely trying to present accurate facts that would be difficult for a layperson to sort out from various sources (pharmacies, etc.). Switching your husband from Pristiq to Brintellix is standard operating procedure. The trouble may have occurred because Dr. Jones didn't get him low enough on the Pristiq before starting the Brintellix at all, or before increasing the Brintellix from 5 mg q d to 10 mg q d. In my opinion, the concurrent administration of Wellbutrin had NOTHING to do with the problem. It is not really all that active with regard to the serotonin system of the body. Rather, the interaction… was between the Pristiq and the Brintellix. How rapidly to do the crisscross change from Pristiq to Brintellix is a judgment call. The reason to do a crisscross (raise the new drug while lowering the old one) is so that the patient isn't left completely "bare" while the new antidepressant takes the usual minimum of two weeks to kick in.

Dr. Jones sent my husband out of the office with Brintellix when he was already on 450mgs of Wellbutrin, 100mgs of Trazadone, and 100mgs of Pristiq, because he stated he wanted to taper him off of Pristiq, presumably due to manic (e.g. agitated) symptoms. Over the course of two weeks, my husband became increasingly agitated, complained of headaches, was cold, experienced nausea, and then became confused and vomited once the drug was increased to 10mgs. Since the symptoms began around the time of the Brintellix prescription, I began to suspect it was the cause. When I Googled the drug, I found out that it interacts with Wellbutrin. Specifically, there is an enzyme reaction between the two drugs that causes Brintellix to dump out in your system all at once, therefore increasing the chances of serotonin syndrome. This was additionally verified with Express Scripts, CVS, and the drug manufacturer. The online warning is that the findings of an interaction are clinically significant, that… the risks outweigh the benefits, so it should not be prescribed with the drug. The on-call doctor who answered at 2am in the morning stated to quit taking the drug immediately, and if the symptoms continued to go to the emergency room. When Dr. Jones was confronted, he simply didn't understand what the problem was prescribing the two together because he stated that they are not contraindicated. By definition, contraindication is defined as a reason or a factor to withhold specific medical treatment; therefore, according to clinical findings, the drug should have never been prescribed if he was going to keep him on Wellbutrin. Moreover, according to CVS and Express Scripts, Trazadone and Pristiq can also intensify the problem even though they are not listed as interactions. So I filed a complaint with the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, our insurance provider, the FDA, and wrote some bad online reviews. But finding another psychiatrist proved to be difficult. There are 2-3 month waiting periods for some, and the psychiatrist that we got him in with did not feel comfortable treating him because the doctor is out of town too much and has no other supporting staff in his office. Therefore, this doctor suggested that in the interim that my husband be seen by another doctor in Dr. Jones office, simply because his prescription for Pristiq is about ready to run out, he needs to be tapered off of it, and should not go off of it cold turkey due to the debilitating side effects. Despite requesting to be transferred to another doctor in the practice, Dr. Jones refused to allow my husband to transfer. And he has to have his approval to transfer to another one. Why did he refuse? Because I filed a complaint with the state healing board, with our insurance provider, and made online complaints readily viewable to the public. Furthermore, Dr. Jones claimed to my husband that I threatened his life in one of the complaints, which isn't remotely true and can be verified through this entity. It is irresponsible and irrational medicine not to refer my husband to another provider in the practice in the interim for a lot of different reasons, including previous suicidal attempts in the early 2000s, ongoing symptoms of mania (e.g. agitation) and depression, and the need to taper him off of the Pristiq rather than going cold turkey.

Dr. Jones is wonderful. He treats me like a peer. He's gentle, understanding, warm, helpful, and insightful. He has a way of seeing within what I tell him and helps me see myself.

he's sarcastic and rude. he doesn't listen, arrogant, and talk to you like you're an idiot. he wasted my time and $$$$, and made things much worse. You might as well tell him what medicine you want and he'd prescribe it to you cause he likes easy solution. Trial and Error. If you're looking for treatment, he's not the doctor for you.
