Dr. Scott W Smilen, MD

0 stars for Dr. Smilen's character and patient relations. My wife was finally diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction after 6 years of suffering from constant pain and visiting several doctors. Following the diagnosis, we learned that one of the only treatments for the condition is internal botox injections into the trigger points of the pelvic floor. Unfortunately, there are only a few doctors who perform such a procedure. Through our own research, we found Dr. Smilen. She had an excellent consultation with Dr. Smilen who built up the trust that she was in great hands. She made a procedure appointment months in advance. When the date got closer, the reality that she could possibly be pain free in a few days was emotionally overwhelming. The morning of procedure, we began our journey from NJ to his NY office. When we were less that an hour from his office and just about to enter the Lincoln Tunnel, my wife received a call from his secretary saying they had to cancel the appointment… because they forgot to order to injection needle that was required for the procedure. WHAT?! We had both taken the day off from work, scheduled our babysitters, and spent money on gas and tolls. We demanded to hear from someone to explain how this could happen. Reluctantly, we turned around and drove home. My wife was crying for the next day and continues to live in pain. How could such a respectable doctor and his office fail to prepare for the procedure? The answer is simple. This is because Dr. Smilen doesn't truly care about his patients. This was clear to us when my wife never received a call from Dr. Smilen. He knew how important this was to her. He knew that it was his fault the needle wasn't ordered. Yet, he didn't have the courage to call my wife and apologize for their error. To this day, no one from his office has called. We wrote a letter expressing our distaste with handling of the matter. That was three weeks ago and we still haven't gotten a response. Bottom line is that Dr. Smilen doesn't care! If you're reading this review, I implore you to find another doctor. He may be a skilled doctor, but his character is clearly lacking, and that should be just as important to you when searching for a doctor.

Dr. Scott Smilen is my blessing!!! Dr. Scott Smilen and his team saved my life. I was lucky to have found such a professional who has cared for me as if I was a part of his immediate family. Dr. Scott Smilen is a scholar by degree, a Master of his craft by Discipline, and humanitarian with values set higher than the ethics that governs him to practice medicine. Dr. Scott Smilen hands are served by God! 17 year struggle and he gave me back my life!! Thank you publicly Dr. Scott Smilen for all you do and done!!!

Dr. Smilen is one of my favorite doctors -- not only because he's incredibly nice and thorough and unrushed, but also because he really worked with me, surgically and medically, when other UroGYNS had been reluctant to operate due to my young age. I've had two prolapse-repair surgeries with him; both have left me with minimal discomfort and enormous improvements to my quality of life. Staff is lovely and very competent, office is clean, wait is usually 15-20 minutes.

Surprisingly easy to make an appointment for this time of year in Manhattan. Staff was great and very nice, despite my tardiness. Dr. Smilen is very warm and does not strike me at all as a typical burnt-out doctor, as opposed to many other docs I've seen. He explained everything in depth, entertained my "Dr. Google" questions with zero snark, and actually came up with a treatment plan for me. He helped restore a bit of my faith in doctors' commitment to their patients :-)

I will start off by saying that Dr. Smilen himself was wonderful at the one appointment I was able to get with him. I had been referred to him by my regular GYN after some on-going issues and she recommended I see a specialist. The initial appointment was not terribly difficult to book and they were accommodating as I did need to reschedule once (with plenty of notice) as I had to fly out of the country for work. When I got to the office for Dr. Smilen it was a bit chaotic as it appears to be a large practice with many doctors and my wait was about 20 minutes before being seen by the doctor. After my initial consultation and exam he wanted me to stay for some follow up tests, however, already being out of my office for over an hour I told them I would need to reschedule. That was my first mistake as I should have rescheduled then and there but figured best to do via phone (as there was a long line at the front desk). I called Dr. Smilen's office and navigated the lengthy… call directly prompts. Finally when I reached the appointments number, I received a voicemail recording and left a voicemail to be called back. Unfortunately, at the time of this call back I was on another work related call that I could not just drop off of and leave. Shortly after I called back and again received the same voicemail recording. Thinking there must be a better way to get in contact with someone there, I tried other prompts on the call directory and even after speaking to a few people they would just direct be back to the voicemail. This happened for a few weeks. During this time I had a lot of personal matters and travel plus my symptoms had started to subside a bit so the appointment wasn't so top of mind. However, recently with the symptoms starting back up again I have been trying for the past 3 weeks to get an appointment. I left another 2 voicemails and requested kindly that they try me either very early in the morning or later in the afternoon/early evening as most of my middays are consumed with conference calls. No response. No call back. Nothing. At this point my mother, who has been a nurse for 40 years and now works to help patients schedule appointments within the same network, was pushing me to find another doctor however I really wanted to try and get this appointment set with Dr. Smilen as one I liked him as a doctor and two I did not want to have to rehash everything and why I was there with a new doctor. I finally am able to get some people on the phone (although at one point was put on hold for 20 minutes and eventually hung up and called back) and when the women responsible for scheduling called me back said the only available appointment was for Oct 19th...over 2 weeks away! When I once again stated how frustrated I was by the lack of response to my calls (it was this woman's voicemail box I was hitting and leaving messages for) there was no attempt to make this better or figure something out. I do hope that Dr. Smilen or NYU see this as this treatment of patients is unacceptable and can easily be managed better.

The hardest hurdle to getting to see Dr. Smilen is trying to get an appointment. You get tossed to voice mail, every time. You end up in the phone queue from h_ll. We like him...the question is how to get an appointment? Maybe it's time for someone else.
