Dr Sephalie Y Patel, MD

Dr. Patel is currently Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. Dr. Patel graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to obtain a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. It was during graduate school she decided to pivot to medicine and completed a Bioengineering Research Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in 2004. She went on to Emory University School of Medicine where she received her MD degree in 2008. Dr. Patel completed her residency in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL where she won the prestigious Chairman's Award during her final year, 2012. She went on to complete a fellowship in Regional Anesthesia at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY after which she joined Moffitt Cancer Center in 9/2013.  Since joining Moffitt, Dr. Patel has started the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery …program which focuses on evidence based, cost-effective perioperative care of the surgical patient. She also started the 3rd year medical student rotation which continues to be one of few opportunities for USF medical students to have exposure to Anesthesiology. Dr. Patel started the patient blood management program at Moffitt which includes the development of a maximum surgical blood ordering schedule, preoperative anemia optimization program, and bloodless medicine program. Her research interests include opioid sparing anesthetic techniques, blood management, preoperative nutrition optimization of the surgical patient and has published over 50 peer reviewed manuscripts. Dr. Patel was Director of ERAS and Research from 2015-2022, Vice Chair of Department of Anesthesiology from 2022-2023, and appointed Chair of Department of Anesthesiology in 2023. She currently is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology.
