Dr. Shahreyar Shar Hashemi, MD

I do not recommend!!! His surgery has left me bedridden for 3 years.

I have had two surgeries with Dr. Hashemi this year, and he is a truly brilliant surgeon and diagnostician. Especially you have complex nerve pain or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), I cannot recommend him enough. I have several rare conditions, which means my doctors determine a lot about my quality of life. Among the many providers in my life, Dr. Hashemi has earned his place as my most trusted medical collaborator. Dr. Hashemi and I built a strong doctor-patient relationship last year, when I had severe intractable lower back pain with an unknown source, which was leaving me almost completely bed-bound overnight. Finding the source and treating my pain and limitations had been mishandled for five months by another physician who advertised themselves as an EDS specialist, but did little to help me. Dr. Hashemi agreed to take over the case, and got me a diagnosis -- two giant benign tumors in my trunk -- within a month, and curative surgery shortly after. He gave me my life back and… quickly accomplished what several other providers could not when given much more time. Dr. Hashemi goes above and beyond for his patients. He has spent time battling my insurance to cover my procedures. During both of my surgeries, we had issues with getting my post-op pain meds approved by insurance over the long-weekends that happened to fall before both operations. From the operating room, he updated my family as surgery progressed and took care of the insurance/medication issue, while also executing a perfect operation, despite unexpected complications in my anatomy. And, while his surgical care is excellent, he's also worked very hard to help me pursue non-surgical interventions wherever possible. Through all of this, he has earned my trust and the trust of each of my family members who cared for me during and after surgery. With EDS, I've had to see see dozens of new doctors each of the last four years. Many make it quite clear to me that they are burdened or intimidated by my medical complexity, or use it as justification to provide me with substandard care. Dr. Hashemi is one of the few physicians I have encountered who not only deeply understands (and makes effort to learn more about) my medical complexity, but respects it. Whenever I interact with Dr. Hashemi, I feel respected and cared for as a patient and person. Like any brilliant surgeon, Dr. Hashemi is not without his quirks. But if you accept these quirks, in return, you get to work with an incredibly dedicated doctor, who, if necessary, will spend much more than the typical 20-minute visit with you. The biggest thing I'm addressing here is wait times: because he spends a lot of time with each his patients, you may have a long wait time at his office. The wait times are worth it for his high level of attention and care. But, if flexible work schedules are an issue, I do recommend calling out of work for a few hours around the time of your visit just to be safe. If you're on a diagnostic odyssey with him (as many complex nerve conditions may require), he does refer you to several other providers to rule things out, which some other reviewers have complained about. My experience has been that these referrals are purposeful, he collaborates effectively with the other practices he refers you to, and those other practices have given me great care. Dr. Hashemi is an incredibly skilled surgeon and compassionate, dedicated physician who will stay in the trenches with you until he solves your problem. I highly recommend him and would trust him for any medical issue, but most especially if you have the difficult combination of Ehlers Danlos and any kind of nerve problem.

Totally inept BUTCHER. Stay away . This hack destroyed my pelvis and I had to go to two ER’s. He didn’t even suture my incision up . Left me with a massive scar. He’s a used car salesman . Napoleonic ego. Dangerous!

A doctor who has no shame to be unethical and over confident. He performed a unnecessary surgery for me as after 9 months still in pain, surgery he called simple nerve decompression and telling me I am running after 24 hours. DO NOT TRUST HIM He lies He doesn’t care about you as he used to refer to his wife who is not his ex so he won’t anymore since there is no financial benefit or kick back. Wish instead of all these over confidence he read code of conduct and educate himself about his diagnosis and Referal to 11 different places each appt. Apparently I was not his first messed up case by reading his reviews.

My mother who is 45 years had an accident about 2yrs ago that had left her incapable of walking with her right leg, 2yrs of going to different doctors and specialists who only made her run around pointlessly repeatedly taking test that had already been taken, physically therapy that had only made her leg worsen, and to surgeons who had no idea what they were doing. 2yrs of unbearable pain and struggles that most times wouldn’t even allow her to move from bed. When we first met Dr. Hashemi, he wasn’t at all what we expect! Dealing with these problems for 2 years made us lose hope with all doctors. Dr. Hashemi brought back all hope we had lost. He was very educated with the nerve issues my mother had been enduring also was very informative and gave us every detailed we never had before about my mothers leg. He was very persistent of the bat and got the ball rolling quicker than any of the poor excuse of the doctors we had dealt with. He showed nothing but compassion, care, and dedication… for my moms case and had great knowledge on her case/medical background which was lacked in the doctors we dealt with in those 2yrs my mother struggled. Always made sure to answer any questions we had, always had an amazing positive attitude and outlook on everything, and always treated my mother with respect. Going into surgery he spoke with all of us reassuring us and keeping us in a positive mindset. After surgery my mother’s mobility with her right leg tremendously changed for the best! Within weeks my mother was able to walk, bend, and stand again! The horrific leg pain, the leg trembles, discoloration, the shooting pain from her lower back to her toes, the weird lumps, and the painful numbness of her skin had are no longer an issue! He truly worked his magic on my mothers leg and we couldn’t thank god and him enough for truly helping my mother finally get on a road to recovery and a normal life once again. We highly recommend him to anyone who has been or are struggling to find a truly dedicated, reliable, and REAL specialist to help them. He has restored our hope and much more and for that we thank you very much Dr. Hashemi and his team. We also thank Khalil the Reception for helping us with all the paper work and insurance issues that we dealt with, truly making this experience easier for my mother and us and for always having such a caring and positive attitude!

Total hack. Self righteous, poor listener, talks over you. Could not close my incision and I ended up in two ER’s. Couldn’t be bothered to come to the ER. Destroyed my pelvis. Stay away at all cost.

Stay away from this inept hack. Self righteous, arrogant, poor listener. He operated on me and put me in the ER in DC and back in California. Did not close my incision properly. I’ve been bedridden for almost a year because of him. Don’t risk it. Very argumentative!!

After reading some of the negative reviews, I am shocked. I have been a nurse for 30 years, and am quite picky when it comes to health care providers. Do we have to wait to be seen for our appointments? Sometimes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. A year and 10 different doctors and multiple tests and treatments left us with-yes, there was something wrong with my daughter, but no, they didn't know how to fix her. We went to a neurosurgeon who sent us to Dr. Hashemi. Dr. Hashemi is amazing. He treats every patient like a person and not their disorder. He takes time to get to know you, understand how your issues affect your life, and develops a plan. It took a year to find him, and in 9 months, my daughter has made more progress than in the preceding year. He is always available, and is really just an amazing doctor. We are blessed to have found him.

Hashemi only cares about doing surgery. He makes it seem like you’re the only person he’s worried about and he looses sleep over your case but it’s not true. I have traveled from far to see him and had to get on a plane to get there and back in the same day and he doesn’t care. We have almost missed our flights because he had us waiting so long. We had to fly back out for tests because he wouldn’t let me do them in my hometown. His wife injected who knows what into me countless times. It’s just all a plot to do surgery and make a buck.

Dr. Hashemi is a very personable surgeon. He takes his time with his patients and ensures that he has a picture of the full scope of all your surgical and interventional needs. We drive 7 hours to see this surgeon, and my orthopedic specialist referred me with the statement, "this surgeon knows what he is doing." I am a very complicated case, but I am still achieving improvements under his care.
