Dr. Javaheri is a pulmonologist, and an internationally known sleep physician currently working at Bethesda North Hospital. He is Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, at Ohio State University. He is known for his extensive research on various sleep disorders, including sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on heart failure, opioids-associated sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea.Dr. Javaheri completed his clinical and research fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He joined the University of Cincinnati in 1983 and established a clinical and research sleep lab at the VA Medical Center, where he has done extensive research in the areas of sleep-related breathing disorders and cardiovascular diseases. These research studies have been published in many …peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Thorax, American Journal of Medicine, European Heart Journal, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, Journal of Sleep, Chest and American Journal of Respiratory Disease and Critical Care Medicine.Dr. Javaheri is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Sleep and the Section Editor for Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases in the Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine. In 2019, at the American College of Chest Physicians, he was the recipient of the late Dr. Tom Petty award and delivered a lecture on central sleep apnea in heart failure. He is involved in a phase 3 trial, and National Institutes of Health approved grant, which includes a randomized placebo controlled trial for treatment of central sleep apnea with oxygen in patients with heart failure.Dr. Javaheri has lectured in many countries including China, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Tunisia, India, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Scotland, Denmark, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, Argentina, Oman and Spain. These lectures have dealt primarily with sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive and central sleep apnea and its relation to congestive heart failure. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and American Sleep Disorders Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Javaheri is a doctor who really seems to care about his patients. He is kind, respectful and considerate. I have told a number of people that I believe he could really help them with their sleep issues. The downside comes when I have to also tell people that the two women in the position of his support staff are nowhere near is caliber. If he had a more professional staff this place would be AMAZING. Barb is the WORST! She is the receptionist. I do not know what her job title is, but it has been my personal experience that SHE makes decisions that she is NOT in a position to be making. She even went so far to tell me that I wasn’t allowed to bring something to my sleep lab visit which was blatantly ILLEGAL for her to do. So, be careful of her. She thinks her britches are a lot bigger than they really are and she can cause you some serious issues because of it.

Dr. Javaheri was pleasant during our visits, but his support staff (nurses, receptionists, insurance billing dept) all made getting diagnosed with sleep apnea/narcolepsy a horrible experience for me. I've had an initial consultation, 3 additional office visits, an overnight sleep study, a daytime/nightime sleep study (cancelled by provider's billing dept), hours spent on phone calls with Anthem and zero medical help for sleep related issues so far. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere if you need to schedule a sleep study. I can't speak to whether this doctor is good, but even if he is, it isn't worth dealing with his team.

Dr. J is excellent at his craft, and his ability to explain the necessity for CPAP to someone without medical knowlege, is surpassed only by his kindness.
