Dr. Shail Mahesh Vyas

Usually I do not write reviews for the Doctors particularly for the doctors with super specialists unless something terrible or abnormal things happen. My Mother-in law, who is 85 Years old, lives with us in Corona. She is healthy and fit to her age and does the routine walking workouts as a ritual. On Dec 6 2018, she completed her morning routine walk and after a bath started complaining about pain her ankle. Such a sudden swelling and complaint for pain would lead you to believe the sprain or muscle twitching. My younger son, who is into his internal medicine residency, started icing and keep foot elevated to alleviate the pain. Her pain and swelling subsided but not to a great extent. We decided to consult nearby ortho but being last day of the week no appointment was available. I am patient with Dr Shail Vyas and contacted his office to see if he can accommodate in his busy schedule. We were there right at 4.30 PM just before closing hours of his office. Dr Shail Vyas asked few… questions after physical exam like whether she had a Fever or duration of the pain and other complaints and recommended to have x ray to rule out any bone or muscle issues. But even before getting X rays he opined that it seems something abnormal like infection. I was just starring at him wondering how in the world sudden traumatic swelling has to do with infection???? After getting X rays, he started elaborating on his observation and opinion----It is a staph infection slowly spreading to the body, you need to get a tissue culture, blood screening and MRI and your next stop should be in your area community hospital ER. He gave us a note describing all of these recommendations and advised to show it to the attending doctor at the hospital ER. Attending doctor at the hospital ER room, just looked at the ankle and glanced at the note. In a very sarcastic and apprehensive tone he opined that it could a gout or minor hair line crack and why these super specialists would get to a conclusion even without a blood test? After a long wait, Blood work, MRI and haggling 8 hours after her admission attending doctor admitted that it is a staph infection and we must follow the procedure prescribed by Dr Vyas!!! My mother in-law was diagnosed with staph infection and had to undergo surgery on emergency basis as infection was spreading fast due to weak immune system. She is still undergoing wound care treatment at home. I cannot imagine if Dr vyas would not have advised us to go to ER as our next stop. I wish majority of doctors and specialist doctors would have such acumen and professional integrity. Here my experience is contrary to my belief and encouraged me to write a honest review.

Dr. Vyas seems competent, I'll give him that. His billing is the issue. I had extra x-rays added on to my bill to the tune of $260, had a cheap thumb protector billed to my insurance at $400, and for his assistant taking 15 seconds to put it on me they billed my insurance $130 for "orthotic mgmt and training". You gotta be kidding me! The front office is very disorganized, and there is no online bill payment options on the back end. All in all, stay way. I feel dirty after being involved with this doctor and his office.

Great doc. Valued my time. Spent more than enough time with me. Explained my knee problem very well. Did not try to rush me into surgery but rather educated me on my options. Minimal wait too!
