Dr. Sheba Khalid, MD

I was surprised to see negative comments about Dr Sheba Khalid. My husband went to her for 10 years after diagnosed with a terminal liver disease. She brought him out of a depression. Kept him stable. When I took him for a liver transplant the docs there took him off all meds to make his liver last as long as possible but it threw him into a depressive mode. He cried and told me he just couldn’t take all the negatives happening to him. I had never seen him cry before. I called her from Nebraska and asked for her help. She stood up against an entire team of surgeons and put my husband back on his anti depression meds. That takes guts!! Plus those surgeons didn’t challenge her or me after that. It was a quality of life issue. She understood that. Those were great surgeons no doubt think they were more interested in the big bucks that a transplant brings and she was more interested in the well being of her patient.

I had seen Dr. Khalid for a few years after an acute stay at a psych hospital had recommended me to her. She was my first psychiatrist so I didn't know what to expect. Short story: The good things are that you do typically see her at the time of your appointment, and her office is very nice and well kept. She is well spoken. The bad is her lack of empathy, her arrogance, and the offices extremely limited hours. Long story: Although I always left her office feeling worse then I went in, two moments stand out... One time I was telling her and a student (who I agreed to shadow the session) about how this new medication was making me feel numb and apathetic, I just wasn't feeling anything. Dr. Khalid LAUGHED with the student and said that bipolar patients "always complain about their mood being too stable." She then joked how she wished she could have more mental stability. Fast forward in time, onto a new medication. Despite typically being a weight neutral drug, it made me gain… 30+ pounds in less than three months, showing no sign of stopping. With my frame, it caused a DRASTIC change in my body, to the point where I only had one pair of pants left that fit. I called her saying I didn't want to be on it anymore and asked her how I could safely taper off of it. She said she didn't understand why I was so upset over the gain, that it was "not a big deal" but agreed to give me instructions for getting off the med when I told her I was getting off it either way. The last conversation I had was extremely unprofessional, where she dumped me as a patient because I missed an appointment (I had been in the hospital), gave me no referrals to other doctors, and then hung up. Now I'm low on meds and without a psychiatrist, but I never have to see her again so I guess it's a blessing in disguise.

I will not return to an office where the doctor makes you feel worse, doesn't take the time to read the files sent and treats their patients as an inconvenience. I have worked almost 7 years on getting better after a head injury and felt as though I was back at the beginning. As I have worked with those with mental illness I know you don't belittle the consumer/patient to the point they leave the office crying. I know it will take a little more for me to trust another psychiatrist on my next visit. I only needed the knowledge of my medication, not someone making me doubt myself.

She doesn't take the time to get to know her patients. She only cares about the money. Had to wait 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time, even though I was the only patient there.

Terrible doctor and human being. Only in this business for the money especially Medicare patients.

What a lovely person and educated and pleasant to boot. She is well-spoken, kind, and caring. She truly sees the big picture! The staff is working on changing and there is turnover, but overall she's a great doc.

Every time I've been there I've had to wait about 25 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. On my last visit however I waited 50 minutes. Nobody acknowledged me after I checked in. I walked out. I am not going back. I refuse to wait that long for a five minute appointment. Even during the appointment she seems almost mechanical and mostly just wants to push brand name medications.
