I do not have words that express the great experience I had with Dr. Shekhar Dagam and the back surgery he performed on me. I had such difficulty walking and sleeping at night. Even using a cane it was difficult and I was feeling like the old man I am. Both of my legs ached so much at night and the only relief was to sit up with pillows in my lap and try to fall asleep. Dr. Dagam was very thorough on his first visit of explaining to me what was causing the shooting pains down my legs. He showed me what the MRI exposed as the problem and then proceeded to detail what needed to be done. Dr. Dagam presented me with a couple of options and was very patient in explaining to me all the pros and cons of each option. He never seemed rushed, but truly wanted to allay my fears about the back surgery I was to undergo. The surgery was six months ago and the recovery is progressing in the time-frame that he had led me to believe. The two-year follow-up is also an indication that he wants the best for his patients.

Prior to being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, I noticed my day to day life was changing. What started with a stumble here or there turned into many falls around my home. Some of the falls could have been fatal as I almost hit my head several times. I went from being very independent to needing a cane to walk and I was not able to drive my car. I would wake up in the night and fear having to walk to the bathroom because I was worried that I was going to fall. I saw my primary care doctor and was I was initially diagnosed with Vertigo. I even went to see a specialist for my inner ear but the answers I was getting did not match up with what I was experiencing. The falls I had did not seem to be from dizziness. To me it felt like the room or gravity was suddenly shifted, as if my body was pushed or pulled, and I had no control to the point where I would just fall. My doctors told me to give it time and the Vertigo would pass. I couldn’t keep going on like this. I finally saw… a Neurologist who diagnosed me with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and referred me to Dr. Dagam. Dr. Dagam took the time to tell me about Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. He confirmed my gut feeling that this was more than Vertigo. When Dr. Dagam explained the surgery, I was struggling with the fact that I would need to have a hole drilled into my skull. My thoughts went back to how my life had been turned upside down and would this surgery help me, would I get me life back? Dr. Dagam said the first step was to see if removing spinal fluid would help me. I saw Dr. Dagam and he performed a Lumbar Puncture to remove fluid. I was nervous about the procedure because it involved my spine but found the process to be simple and easy Dr. Dagam made me feel comfortable and at ease. The results of the Lumbar Puncture were amazing. I was able to walk steadier, but I still used my cane, and I was even able to drive my car short trips. Dr. Dagam told me that because of my positive results with the Lumbar Puncture I was a good candidate for the shunt surgery. When I heard this, I decided in my mind to go ahead and have the shunt put in a soon as possible. Although the thought of surgery scared me, I felt it was the right decision. My next steps were to see Dr. Dagam about the surgery and decide if I still wanted it done. Dr. Dagam took a lot of time to explain to me the pros and cons, talked about all my options including the side effects and how long the shunt could last. After much thought, I decided to procede and get the surgery done. The surgery day came and Dr. Dagam met with me and my family, he explained the surgery to everyone and took the time to answer all of our questions. Dr. Dagam made sure everyone felt at ease and was very compassionate and understanding. The surgery went very well, Dr Dagam came out and updated my family on the results and again answered all their questions. My hospital stay was a few days and then I was back home. Recovery itself went well and after just a couple of weeks I was almost back to my normal self, minus the hair that was sacrificed. My first thought was to try and get back to 100% on my own. My current goal is to start doing Yoga again and get back to my everyday life. I’m happy to say I’m well on my way. Dr. Dagam did an awesome job and took care of all my needs. After sustaining a neck injury in an automobile accident I went through physical therapy took different medications to eliminate the pain to no avail. My Neurologist ordered an MRI and after review recommended surgery, however, mentioned the potential risks and rewards. Dr. Dagam was highly recommended not only by my Neurologist, but 2 other Physicians I visit regularly. I was convinced after my 1st consult with Dr. Dagam that if I do decide to go forward with surgery he would be the Surgeon to perform it. His approach in explaining the procedure was very pragmatic, void of any pressure or urgency, leaving me to make an informed decision. I also learned that severe shoulder pain I was experiencing, as intense as a previous torn rotator cuff, was most likely from my neck. Very experienced in Neurosurgery. Dr. Dagam was the 2nd surgeon that I interviewed for my spine issues (losing feeling in, and the use of my legs due to Lumbar stenosis). Interviewed an Orthopedic surgeon initially but did not believe that I needed his recommended Laminectomy PLUS fusion (L3-S1). I interviewed one final neurosurgeon after Dr. Dagam to compare notes. Dr. Dagam was my pick. professional, knowledgable, experienced. 2 1/2 hr surg., 3 day hospital stay, back to work in 8 weeks! ????
