Dr. Sonya Elizabeth Williams, MD

I’ve never left a doctor’s appointment feeling so discouraged. Dr. Williams was condescending and basically told me that at my age I should just learn to accept being borderline obese (after a rapid & mostly unexplained weight gain), even though there is diabetes and high BP on both sides of my family. She said losing weight would not make me more healthy or make me feel any better about myself. She also contradicted herself by saying I need to further restrict my calories to lose weight and then recommending a book that says calorie restriction does not work. Then she actually suggested that I think about plastic surgery! I have never had body image issues and was expecting a comprehensive plan (not a quick fix) to address recent weight gain and was basically told it was hopeless…even though I have never been overweight until now. Apparently, I have to wait until my weight is making me physically ill to do anything about it. Whatever happened to prevention?

My husband and I have had at least two appointments with Dr. Williams and never been satisfied. She comes across as sarcastic and injects too many of her own personal experiences into the conversation, rather than ask about the patient’s pregnancy. My husband is a very laid back man but each time we have met with her he has said, “that was a waste of time. All I heard about was her pregnancies”. She comes across at first as very friendly and bubbly individual but once she gets 15 minutes into the apt., her comments about your deletions my or questions you ask feel like gabs and she talks down the other medical staff. I was much later in my pregnancy at my last apt. with her and left the office feeling as though my healthy and on target pregnancy was falling apart. I left the office wondering if she gets an odd satisfaction convincing others things are falling apart, yet- she was going to be the doc at their next apt. to fix it. All feels very dramatic and unnecessary. The other doctors… associated with the practice are fantastic.

After seeing the very low rating another patient gave her, I felt like I should share my experience with Dr. Sonya Williams. I did not see her much throughout my pregnancies, only at the very end. I gave her my printed birth plan and she reviewed it and put it on my file and agreed to it and explained the things I was concerned with and she commented that it was awesome that I was so prepared for my childbirth (it was my 1st baby, 18 at the time). Anyway, she happened to be the woman who delivered both of my babies and she was very nice and very laid back and understanding in my experience. I had very specific wishes with my birth experience and it all went as I wished. I doubt I could have had a better experience. In short, she was awesome and if I ever decide to have a 3rd baby, I'm asking for her again!

Dr. Sonya Williams was not a friendly doctor. I am 38 weeks pregnant and I had no choice but to see her bc my doctor wasn't available. She asked me about my concerns and she was the most sarcastic woman ever. She also needs more training on how to check a woman's cervix. Did not ask me if I was comfortable as she had me sitting straight up instead of laying me flat on my back. She couldn't even reach my cervix as I sat in that position and complained about how she couldn't reach it. After she "checked" me, she told me that the cervix she "couldn't reach" was closed. I was 1cm dilated the day before (after being checked by an experienced doctor) but it just so weirdly happened that I am not open at all once Sonya checked me. Once again, I am 38 weeks pregnant and I want to know how my cervix is. She acted like she didn't want to check me and with her pulling that move confirmed that she had an issue with checking my cervix. Long story short - Terrible experience.
