Dr. Stephen M Hellman, MD

Strange behavior... My primary care doctor of 38 years retired recently and recommended Dr. Hellman. His staff were friendly and very courteous. Even though I was punctual, he asked if he could have his lunch before seeing me. Being good natured I waited for him to finish. When he finally entered the room he now appeared to have a chip on his shoulder, almost as if he were intimidated or frightened over something. Flipping open his laptop he started firing off relentless questions and became angry if I tried to elaborate beyond a single word response. I explained that sometimes it's not as simple as a "yes" or a "no" when it comes to complex issues. I really tried to respectfully comply with his wishes and at no time did I raise my voice yet he insisted that he "was in command of the interview" and if I "didn't like it, I could get up and leave right now!" Well I diplomatically protested by saying "I'm sorry you feel that way. Care to explain what's wrong?" He asked me to leave… without further explanation. There was no reason given for his unprofessional behavior. I was never so humiliated by a doctor in all my 61 years.

Great experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend Dr. Hellman to anyone looking for a doctor that really cares.

Dr. Stephen Hellman knows how to ask the right questions, listen and truly extend care to patients. He's a good person, very professional, authoritative as well as collaborative. Just the kind of internist I was looking for, and so glad I found. I'd recommend him (and have)in a heartbeat. Does a good balancing job of being a specialist and a generalist. (He's my internist, definitely treats the person not the symptom.)
