Dr. Stephen Lloyd Kates, MD

This guy is good. I can see why he is the head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department at the Med School. The left knee replacement went well. I'm a little over 3 months out and just took my first mile walk. Something I haven't been able to do in 2 or 3 years. Can also walk normally down an 8 to 10 percent grade without assistance. Something I haven't been able to do in 3 or 4 years. The walking down the steep grade is what first made me realize that I had problems with that knee.

Dr Kates performed my total knee replacement surgery on December 9, 2024. I was very pleased with Dr Kates and my entire Care Team. They made sure I was very well prepared for surgery. They were also very responsive to my questions. And I really liked the Force app that helped me keep up with all my exercises both before and after surgery. I have recovered so well that I have scheduled my second knee replacement surgery with Dr. Kates.

Dr Kates is professional, pleasant and prompt. He listens and doesn't rush his appointments. I am very satisfied with the total knee surgery he did which I needed. The pre-op instructions were very clear and helpful, as were the post op instructions. I highly recommend Dr Kates!

The care I received before, during and after my total hip replacement could not have been better. From the first visit to the office until the follow up visit after the surgery, I encountered nothing but well qualified professionals. Dr. Kates did a marvelous job in describing the procedure and in actually doing the surgery. I cannot sing his praises enough, or the praise for his team. Excellent care!

Dr. Kates performed a total hip replacement on my right hip on September 12, 2017. When I went to rehab 3 days later I was told it was the best hip replacement they had seen. The rehab center was overwhelmed by my progress and let me go home after about 1 week. I am now about 11 weeks out and my right hip now feels totally natural, like the hip that I was born with before it developed arthritis. One of the best things Dr. Kates did was make me lose weight before he would operate. When I protested, he told me that his brother was my size and he wouldn't operate on HIM until he lost weight either. Very good way to motivate someone. I'm now about 250, down from 330 a bit over a year ago...

Dr. Kates took time to answer all of my questions. He made sure I understood all of my options, and walked me through every step of the procedure I will be having.

I waited 2 weeks for a appointment with his PA (who was excellent). I got a needed MRI. that showed the cartilage was gone in my left hip and the bone was bruised and swollen I could not get a pre op appointment with Dr Kates for 6-8 weeks . I was in a great deal of pain but appointments are scheduled on first come basics. I think Dr Kates should stop taking new patients until his practice is more manageable.

If you have a surgical complication, it is impossible to get followup. Too busy.
