Dr. Stephen John Matse, DO

I recently required medical treatment for various worsening medical issues. Some of which I found myself with questions. I went to see Dr Matse Prime Care Providers ( PCP) in Richland. I want to stress that I’ve been seeing Dr Matse since approximately 2003. He’d always been very caring, concerned, compassionate and empathetic. Providing care from first visit, through testing and completing a plan of care for the problem until resolved. This visit was very far from his usual bedside manner. To the point he was rude, refused to communicate directly with me even following information from an ER visit that recommended I see my PCP within 3 days. When I called his nurse she said that I have an appt in a month and he said wait until then. Upon further requests to speak with him then, she again said wait till next month. This is not the Dr Matse I’ve known all these years. Is it he or his staff who’ve forgotten the patient comes first. As a physician provide care until issue resolves or… at least the patient feels they’ve received satisfactory treatment with the care, compassion and empathy a Dr took his oath to provide. Or is it the nurse that did not communicate the information I’d requested her to provide him? I’d given her additional information related to test findings, ER visit, and related family history that I do not think he was given as the old Dr Matse would have called me to discuss these issues or at least made an appointment for me to come in to further investigate my concerns relating to my being totally debilitated and having to miss work as I’m unable to walk or navigate stairs. I’m well aware of changes related to insurance coverage and the hectic days he puts in and that I’m not his only patient. I just don’t know if it’s worn him down through the years to this point, but now after all these years I’m in search of a new PCP because I need care and answers.

As a doctor, he seems good. The way the office is ran is questionable. For example, I needed results of bloodwork so I know what amount of medication to take and I can’t get through. I think they take phone off the hook. This medication is life sustaining and I had bloodwork few days ago and have not been able to take this medication until I hear from Dr. Matsee, it is now day 3 without my medication and I have been trying to contact his office for hours. You can’t even leave a message with the office. I would think with all the technology available today that the office would have an answering machine or voicemail phone system. This is not a one time occurrence. This happens 95 percent of the time I need to get hold of his office. I truly find this frustrating, dangerous and very time consuming because I have been trying for over 2 hours to get in contact with someone. The office has been closing at 12:00, so now I willl be going on 4 days without medication. He really needs to tell… the office workers to not take phone off hook, which I have been told by the office staff that this is what they do, get an answering machine or update phones to receive voice mail.

DOCTOR MATSE, HAS BEEN MY HUSBAND & MY DOCTOR ALSO MY TEENAGE CHILDREN and my Father UNTIL his passing! He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon rectal cancer he and my father's oncologist were in constant contact with each other I have NEVER seen a DOCTOR with the compassion and caring that DOCTOR MATSE HAS FOR HIS PATIENTS. I am a retired nurse who left the Johnstown area but still travel from Bedford county to Johnstown just to go to Jim as my DOCTOR BECAUSE of the type of DOCTOR he is ! I would NEVER go to anyone else for care !

After my knee surgery I was transferred to Lee hospital Criton center for physical therapy and recovery. When I was having problems that the bone Doctor's couldn't handle I called my family doctor. And he came and gave me the care I need from his expertise. His bed side manner is excellent. He is the best.

I go to see Joni and front office girl. They are always nice two thumbs up

Love Dr Matse and his Staff. Always looking out for his patients . He has a great personality. Plus He has caught symptoms that our heart Drs didn’t catch . I’d highly recommend

i can never get through on the telephone. She even told me it sounded like I was havng a stroke& she is a receptionist!!
