Dr. Stephen W Pournaras JR., MD

I would give a negative rating if it’s possible. I was referred to Dr Pournaras from my primary orthopedic doctor because he specializes in hand & wrist. His office protocol is very bureaucratic where his staff is a hinderance to get an appointment vs helping the patient to see the doctor. All the communications are done via voice mail or email. In the process of emailing with his assistant to get an appointment, she told me to drop off a disk with my MRI images BEFORE I can get an appt. I asked her to help me so that I can bring the disk on the day of my appt to save an hour of driving, she stopped responding to my emails. I followed up with additional emails & asked her to tell me if she cannot accommodate my request. No response. Regardless of how talented this doctor may be, he’s a service provider to a customer (patient), who pays for his skills. It is utterly unprofessional for his staff to ignore correspondence from a customer.

Excellent team. Excellent Surgeon. Right hand complete. If I was not in a hand brace 14 days post-op right now, I would add a lot more words to describe why you should trust this doctor, but, I'll just say-look no further. He is the guy if you want your hands fixed. -Miriam.

I don't. know what some of the people are talking about. I visited him today for the first time. I was expecting a guff, unwilling to listen, arrogant Doctor, based on a few reviews. What a pleasure. He asked me questions about the pain in my hand. He showed me what was causing the pain and offered printed information on the condition. He offered me two options to correct the problem. One was a injection today and a wait and see for 5 weeks. Another was surgery. I took the injection treatment to give it a chance. I thank my referring Doctor for recommending him. Visit him and make up your own mind.

This office was a total mess. Delays in getting appointments and long delays in waiting room. The doctor was arrogant and operated but never fixed a thing! Skip it!

After reading Dr. Pournaras reviews, I agree that he is not the most dynamic personality, but I was not coming to be entertained, I want help with my numb hand and injured elbow. I found after visiting a few other "sports doctor's" Dr. Pournaras to be knowledgeable, helpful and clear on how to treat my problem. I would recommend him to anyone frustrated with not getting straight answers or feeling like your issues are misdiagnosed. I am happy to say, that i avoided surgery, and so far so good, my elbow is healing and the feeling is coming back to my hand. Thank you Dr. Pournaras for finally finding a solution. You may not be Dr. Feel Good, but you are genuine, honest and care about your patients.

He might be rough around the edges...but he's an outstanding surgeon.

I was referred to this practice and was given an appointment with Dr Pournaras. Accuracy of diagnosis has yet to be fully determined, although I'm somewhat confident in that accuracy. However, I will not go into surgery with an individual who is so arrogant, sarcastic and suffers from such a God complex. Regardless of any possible expertise he may or may not possess. I do not appreciate being made to feel dramatic over my extreme pain or tolerate the rude innuendo he seems to endlessly amuse himself with. He's a horses rear in my opinion.

Dr. Pournaras surgically repaired my broken wrist, and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. I found him to be willing to spend whatever time I needed to explain the procedure and the expected recovery process. Everything has been exactly as he explained. It is obvious he is very exacting and cares about the details - exactly what I want from a doctor. I would highly recommend Dr. Pournaras and wouldn't go to anyone else.

Dr. Pournaras saw me with little wait, examined me thoroughly and patiently, was perhaps a bit gruff, but cracked a smile or two, and was genuinely appreciative that I had brought pertinent records and labs from previous visits with other doctors. He was very clear about what I needed to do, who I needed to speak to, and where we go from here. I'm happy with him.

During my initial appointment with Dr. Pournaras, he quickly recognized that the physician i had seen in triage at another hospital had improperly bandaged my hand (i had recently broken my 3rd metacarpal and dislocated both my 3rd, 4th and 5th metacarpals). Furthermore, after a successful initial surgery, he promptly scheduled a follow-up appointment and was very flexible in his scheduling (he managed to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment during which i was experiencing incredible post-op pain). I should mention that the staff are occasionally pretty rude/snobby, imo.. but in any case Pournaras is a great surgeon and doctor, i trust him entirely.
