Dr. Steven Thomas Cobery, MD

He did my first cervical spine surgery in May of 2008 while at Portsmouth Naval, Va. He made sure my pain was well treated, but explained he was only going as high as Percocet because of my health history. I am forever grateful he did not put me on the usual meds for my situation, Oxycontin. I have never taken it to this day. He even used Methadone to step me off and be done with all pain meds. Not many doctors know how to properly treat chronic pain that lasts over a few years before they are given the correct diagnosis. I was finally taken seriously about my pain, he diagnosed me correctly and expediently by doing an MRI right away. He put a titanium disc in my C3-C4 vertebrae and had me on the road to recovery. He listened, answered my questions and explained exactly what he was going to do to fix me. Highly recommended.

Dr Cobery performed a spinal fusion (S1-L4) on me in 2010. The right side S1was rubbing against my S1/S2 foramen nerve root, causing excruciating pain. Dr Cobery refused to take it out. Now I am in chonic pain, with drop foot and weakening right leg. Because of the irritation to my nerve root I may also arachnoiditis. Dr Cobery also made false official statements in my medical record confirmed by the HIPPA compliance officer and other doctors at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Do not trust him. Always have an independent witness in the room during any consult. He is not trustworthy and shows poor professional judgement.

Dr. Cobery took the time to explain the procedure, and he spoke about it from his own experience. He knew the questions I had and provided answers before I even asked them.
